As of this posting on March 29th 2017, you’ve receive (and will receive more) a myriad of emails about AGMs and Elections in this organization. And I receive a myriad of questions. Totally understandable.
So let me try to explain the DA world.
The Democratic Party Committee Abroad (DPCA) is the international governing body of Democrats Abroad
Democrats Abroad is organized by regions
- EMEA (Europe Middle East Africa)
- Asia Pacific
Regions are made up of Country Committees–
- There are around 60 Country Committees-but let’s just concentrate on Canada- a member of the Americas Region
Country Committees are made up of Chapters –
- There are around 15 Chapters across Canada that make up the Country Committee-but let’s concentrate on Toronto
You receive emails from these three different levels of the organizations. All these participating groups of Democrats Abroad are required to have an AGM and elections and we’re required by various charters and by-laws to inform you, ergo a lot of emails you may not be interested in.
Your vote is important to the future of this organization. Very few people vote in internal Democrats Abroad elections. It's usually just been us folks who are willing to take on the work of Getting Out the Vote that ran for office. The fact that we had to be elected was just a formality.
But this year it's different with in the Canada elections. It is the first time we have contested positions and we need participation by our members to make a fair selection.
I ask you to take a few moments and participate in the democratic process for the election of the leaders of this hardworking organization.

Please note, as I am running for Chair of Toronto, uncontested, I have already asked all of the nominees to stay on the Toronto board as part of a committee no matter who “wins”! But I ask you still to participate.

FILING DEADLINE FOR U.S. CITIZENS ABROAD IS JUNE 15TH
Americans in Canada and around the world are wondering how to cope with the many U.S. tax issues. This seminar is hosted by U.S. accounting firm Charmaine Lawrence Professional Corporation and Lorne Dubros CFP of Investors Group who have graciously offered their expertise gratis to our members to help demystify and educate Americans on their tax reporting obligations to the U.S.
Thursday, March 16th at 7:15pm presented by Las Whilby of Charmaine Lawrence Professional Corporation.
To help our Toronto chapter, which includes the whole GTA plus outlying cities from Oshawa to Oakville, raise much-needed funds to pay for Get Out The Vote expenses, so we take back congress in 2018, we ask that you donate $20 (per person) to attend, payable with your registration.

This seminar is to provide our members a general overview of US income tax compliance issues as well as changes to US regulations. FBAR, PFIC, and the US-Canada agreement will be discussed as well. Although there will be time at the end for questions, this is not a venue for individual tax issues. Please refer all personal case studies to your qualified US tax accountant.
If there is enough interest there will be additional seminars in Toronto in the coming weeks. We will advertise them one at a time until demand peters out.

It is with heavy hearts our family announces that on Friday, February 3, at Kensington Hospice, Joseph Green passed away after a year of fighting renal and bladder cancer.
Joe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rhoda Green, and his sons, Michael Neil and Marc Steven. Joe also leaves behind his daughter-in-law Arlene Hazzan Green, and three grandchildren, Stephanie Rachel Green, Renee Jordan Green, and Doran Sergei Hazzan Green; his sister- and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Paul Friedman; brother Harry Green; nieces Debbie, Leslie and nephew Don Green, and nephews Steven and David Friedman.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Joe received his Ph.D in Dramatic Theory and Rhetoric from Indiana University in 1964 and his BA in Theatre from Temple University, Philadelphia, in 1956. Joe taught at The University of Louisville, Indiana University South Bend, and Hunter College, before coming to Toronto’s York University in 1968. Subsequently, he became a proud Canadian citizen. He served as Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, from 1973 until 1980, working to establish the departments of Visual Art, Dance, Film, Music and Theatre, as well as The York Winds Ensemble and the York Theatre Review.
Joe brought onto the Faculty numerous Canadian icons, including Mavor Moore (“Mr. Theatre”), while also establishing the York Performance Artists Series at Burton Auditorium, showcasing artists Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Alan Ginsberg, Tom Wolfe and Henry Moore, to name but a few. Many of Joe’s former students and faculty appointments have gone on to fill important positions in Toronto, across Canada and beyond.
Green helped found, and served as Director of, York's MBA Program in Arts Administration and later served as Chair of the Board of Directors of CulTech Collaborative Research Centre. He has served as a consultant for the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Council, New York State Council on the Arts, the American Theatre Association and the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Joe also developed the initial proposals for the York Master of Fine Arts degrees.
When he took early retirement in 1994, Joe held the rank of full Professor in the Faculties of Fine Arts (Theatre), Arts (Humanities) and Administrative Studies (Policy and Strategy). In addition to his academic career, Joe was producer of many stage and TV productions. Notably, he developed, along with Gordon Hinch, the mini-series Glory Enough for All, which won a record-setting nine Gemini awards.
As Chair of Democrats Abroad (Canada), and international Voter Registration Chair, Joe worked to bring in the democratic vote to Americans across the globe. For his local community, he served on the boards of the Toronto Garden District Residents’ Association, and the Canadian Senior Artists’ Resource Network.

Joe inspired many people with the grace, acceptance and openness he displayed while facing life’s final stages. He passed peacefully, with his family at his side.
We will be eternally grateful for the extraordinary care and compassion of doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers at Kensington Hospice, which allowed Joe to live in comfort for many more months than expected.

The following are brief descriptions of each position on the Board to be elected:
Chapter Chair: The Chapter Chair shall be the legal representative of DA Canada-Toronto and the Chief Executive Officer of the organization, and shall preside at all General Meetings and all meetings of the Board. The Chapter Chair shall have Membership responsibility for the day-to-day activities of DA Canada-Toronto and for execution of all activities approved and undertaken by the Board. The Chapter Chair may appoint such ad hoc committees as necessary for the execution of the activities of DA Canada-Toronto. The Chapter Chair shall be a voting member of all Standing Committees and ad hoc committees. The Chapter Chair shall be a member of and attend meetings of Democrats Abroad Canada.
Co- Vice Chairs: In the absence of the Chapter Chair, either of the Co-Vice Chairs shall call and preside at meetings of members and of the Executive Committee. The Co-Vice Chairs shall have such other duties as chairing one or more committees. The Co-Vice Chairs shall work with the Chair to ensure all responsibilities approved by and on behalf of the organization are supervised and executed appropriately. One of the Co-Vice Chairs elected shall be a member who is of the opposite gender to the Chair, as per the by-laws of Democrats Abroad and the rules of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
Secretary: The Secretary shall attend and produce minutes for all Board and Executive Committee meetings. The Secretary shall maintain all files and administrative records of the organization. All of such records shall be open for inspection by members. Minutes of all meetings shall be sent to the Executive Committee once approved by the Chapter Chair and/or either Co-Vice Chair. The Secretary shall schedule and coordinate participation for all Board meetings.
Treasurer: The Treasurer shall manage the finances of the organization, maintain its financial reports to members and make and maintain such financial reports as may be required by law (including without limitation the laws and regulations of the United States and the several States applicable to political parties and contributions to them). All such records shall be open for inspection by members. The Treasurer shall prepare and present to the Annual General Meeting of Democrats Abroad Canada-Toronto a Statement of Income and Expenses and a Balance Sheet.
Members-at-Large: Ten (10) Members-at-Large represent the broader membership and bring to the organization special gifts and talents, which complement those of the other elected officials on the Board. Due to the geographical diversity of the chapter, three (3) positions are dedicated to members residing in Durham,Peel/East Halton and York Regions.
We're only 10 days into the Trump Administration and every day seems to bring a new crisis or outrage. But the burgeoning resistance in the US and around the world is truly inspiring!
At DA Canada, we've seen an unprecedented outpouring of support with many members asking what they can do. Here are some ideas:

You don't need to say much - just let them know you are a constituent and that you want your Senator or Representative to vote against repealing the ACA, make all efforts to overrule the Muslim Ban, demand Trump disclose his financial interests, vote against Trump's Cabinet nominees and new Supreme Court nominee, or any of the many issues that confront us.
If you have Republican representatives, they are the only ones with the power to stand up to Trump's worst excesses. And if you have Democratic representatives, now is the time to stiffen their resolve to obstruct as much of the Republican agenda as possible.
And keep calling - they need to hear from their constituents often! If you haven't seen it yet, the Indivisible Guide has a very useful overview of the best ways to connect with your Members of Congress.

American Freedom Manifesto
We have to be prepared to clean up the mess that Trump is going to leave behind. Just like Obama had to clean up the mess he was left with by the Bush administration.
To exemplify the best of the American democracy by empowering citizens to exercise their vote, to fight for the rights of all Americans, to combat ignorance, and to bring truth out into the light of day. We need to let the American people know that we are committed to protecting their rights and protections, and improving both their lives and the lives of their loved ones., regardless of the social class, race creed, sexual orientation, or wealth – to all Americans everywhere.
We need to become more formally organized, more active, and more constructive, especially now. Temporary defeat just hardens our resolve.
1. We need to reach everyone, not just committed Democrats. This means we need to develop positive ways of providing a viable alternative to FOX and the right-wing extremest on radio, TV, and the Web. They preach intolerance, divisiveness, and hate. We need to teach how tolerance strengthens us and how together we are stronger.
2. We need to be assertive while avoiding violence or threats. Those are the tools of the Trump extremists.
3. We must always tell and support the unvarnished facts.
4. We need to organize like a force of nature starting now for the 2018 elections.
5. We need to be relentless at translating Trump's proposals into their true affects so ALL Americans understand that they will lead to more expensive drugs, more unsafe food, higher medical bills, lower quality of life for everyone, except those at the top, like Trump.
6. We need to compare what Trump promised and what he has delivered. For example, good jobs.
7. We need to make it crystal clear to ALL that Trump and his gang are betraying the values and blood on which America was built and that they know nothing about the meaning of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights on which the foundations of the Republic were build.
It has been suggested that we have a “Constitutional Meter” to measure legislation against clauses in our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
8. We need to highlight how Republicans are trying to silence their critics and deprive everyone of their rights by promoting voter suppression measures. They have used gerrymandering, voter ID laws, early voter booth closing, short absentee ballot submission periods, voter misinformation, closed-source antiquated voter technology.
9. We need to emphasis the contributions that immigration has made to the U.S. in concrete terms. For example, Steve Jobs father was Syrian.
10. We need to operate on many different fronts and be prepared for any personal commitment.
11. We need to protect the vulnerable by being prepared to confront injustice and unfairness.
12. We need to emphasis civility in all we do. "Please" and "thank you" are not just words, but acknowledgements that we value those with whom we deal. We need to identify ourselves with the America we want for our children to see. We need to be creative in how we deal with the wrongs that Trump's agenda will try to impose.
13. We need to focus on any weak points in the Trump agenda. These include replacing congressmen and senators whenever they come up for election/reelection.
14. Trump does not represent true conservative or moderate right-wing values. We need to approach and support Republicans who repudiate everything that Trump and his gang stand for.
15. Trump is a terrible role model for our children and the American people. We need to emphasis this fact.
16. We need to show that everyone matters, including many of the Trump supporters who feel left behind by showing that his proposals will only leave them more powerless, impoverished, and isolated.
In Summary We are the America that welcomes the challenges that changes bring and that our greatness is in the courage with which we overcome these challenges, not how we hid in the impossible past. Version 2.0 Dec 7, 2016 03:55:37 PM P

Democrats Abroad Global Presidential Primary will award delegates to any candidate receiving 15% or more of the primary votes cast. Presidential candidates will be awarded delegates in proportion to their support in the Primary.
Democrats Abroad will also hold caucuses to choose its delegates to the Democratic National Convention. These meetings will culminate in a Global Convention in Berlin, Germany on May 14-15, 2016. Democrats Abroad will have 17 votes at the Democratic Convention, held in Philadelphia on July 25-28.
You may vote for a Presidential candidate in EITHER the Global Presidential Primary, OR your home state’s primary (or caucus if you happen to be there). When you vote in DA’s Global Presidential Primary, you may not vote for a Presidential candidate in your voting state’s primary. BUT you may still vote in your home state’s primary for US House and Senate and other down ballot races as determined by your local election official.
Canada is one of more than 40 countries around the world that will be hosting in person voting on Super Tuesday, March 1, the same day as 13 other U.S. State parties will be holding their Presidential primaries.
Again, Democrats who can’t attend on those days can vote by email, post or fax now until March 8. Details at http://www.democratsabroad.org/global_presidential_primary
