Virtual Enoteca: Drinking wine democratically in Italy with Robert Camuto and Ev Thomas

Grab a glass of wine and join Robert Camuto, a prize-winning journalist, wine writer and author; as he discusses
“Drinking democratically in Italy” with his special guest, Ev Thomas of Terramante Winery.

Robert will speak about how climate change, tariffs, and even Covid - affects wine pioneers in Italy and Europe.
He will also speak about Italy’s unique cultural, geographical and viticultural diversity - all of which come together in its wines from big and small growing areas - brought to the world by a new generation of vintners.

He will preview his third book - this one a series of portraits focusing on southern Italy - due out in 2021 and will talk about some of his favorite Italian summer wines.

As a special treat, Robert will interview Ev about his passionate journey from a painter involved in the San Francisco art scene to a winemaker in the heart of Italy’s Umbria.

Ev will share the story behind his wine called Porcamiseria.

This event will raise money to Get Out the Vote in 2020.

Robert Camuto is a prize-winning journalist and author.
His critically-acclaimed first book, Corkscrewed: Adventures in the New French Wine Country was published in 2008 (University of Nebraska Press 2008) is a pilgrimage through the 21st century’s changing French wine country.

His second book, Palmento: A Sicilian Wine Odyssey - explores Sicily - from its cuisines to its history, mores, culture, and anti-mafia movement - viewed through the prism of wine and winemakers. It was published in 2010; New York Times wine critic Eric Asimov called it a "beautiful, enthralling work."

A native New Yorker with Italian grandparents, Camuto started an alternative newsweekly in Fort Worth Texas in the 1990s. After he sold the paper, he moved to the South of France with his French-born wife and Texan son in 2001. For the last five years, the couple have made Verona their base.

Ev Thomas and Terramante Winery.
An American artist and his Sicilian wife, Claudia, started the vineyard in 2005. As with all stories in Italy, they encountered many bumps but also a few pleasant surprises since they bought a tiny tower house on the outskirts of Todi (on a hill about 35 miles south of Assisi).

Terramante is a small, organic, family winery in the center of Umbria. Their focus is on small-batch, high-quality production in limited quantities. The main grape is Sangiovese but uses also Sagra tino and Foglia Tonda.

Thomas says “I still think of myself as an artist, even with what I’m doing. For me, a glass of wine always represents a celebration of a good day’s work...if you work with your hands you are a worker. If you work with your hands and your head you are an artisan. And if you work with your hands, your head and your heart you are an artist.”
