Why July 5?
On July 5, 1852, abolitionist and former enslaved person Frederick Douglass delivered a searing critique of American slavery to the Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society. Speaking at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, New York, he famously asked: "What, to the Slave, is the Fourth of July?"
By celebrating the day this speech was given, we are protesting the terrible things that have happened in the United States that violate the spirit of Independence Day, e.g. the desecration of the Voting Rights Act, the persecution of immigrants and minorities, and the disrespect shown to sovereign nations. To many of us living abroad we hope it is a helpful counterpart to celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
