Democrats Abroad Global Black Caucus fully supports the March For Our Lives events taking place around the world on March 24th, in solidarity with the students and families who will take to the streets of Washington DC to demand that our lives and safety become a priority, and that we must end this epidemic of mass shootings and killings.
For many decades, black Americans have advocated for gun control. There are dramatic racial, economic and geographic disparities in American gun violence. Black children 17 and under are 10 times more likely to be murdered with a gun than white children. About half of America’s gun murder victims each year are black. The census tracts show that the worst gun violence in 2015 represented about 1.5% of the country’s total population, but 26% of the total gun homicides.
As strong supporters of addressing injustice, we will no longer tolerate the gross negligence of the American government which permits horrific mass murders of our nation's citizens in schools, in movie theaters, at a concert, at work, in churches, in restaurants, at home or anywhere. We must keep military-grade weapons out of our communities, and, yet, Congress has so far refused to pass any laws restricting the purchase of assault weapons. This is unacceptable!
We urge all members of Democrats Abroad and the Global Black Caucus to help change this situation by joining, supporting or hosting an event, by registering to vote and asking your friends and family to register to vote and by making sure to VOTE for Democratic candidates and vote out the NRA and the GOP on election day in November 2018.
Americans overseas can use: votefromabroad.org to get all you need to register/request a ballot, and vote. Voting is extremely important this year. Do not let yourself be disenfranchised! Using Vote From Abroad protects your right to vote. Do it today! #VotingMatters!
