DAN January Newsletter

As we say goodbye to 2024, we are incredibly grateful for all the DAN members and friends who supported our work over the past year. Thank you for voting, opening our emails, participating in DA events, and taking calls.  Democrats invested millions of dollars and hours but ultimately, we came up short in the race for the White House. However, this is no time to roll over. As Heather Cox stated on January 10th “Trump’s false version of reality has been a potent weapon against the Democrats”.

Our work now is more important than ever. 74 million of us voted and cannot and will not be ignored. Hopefully, in 2026 we can take back the House & Senate.

Good news

We are happy to report some good news as well. President Biden has signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law, repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision ("WEP")! This reform will give retirees abroad full Social Security benefits.

This victory was partly made possible by the advocacy of Democrats Abroad and DA members who supported these efforts by emailing & calling their Representatives. Democrats Abroad has been a leader in this fight since 2009; the DAN Chair has lobbied in DC with other members to help get this legislation passed. Our collective effort helped make this happen. Read more here: https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/program-explainers/windfall-elimination-provision.html

We are now focused on Resident-Based Taxation (RBT). In December, Congressman Darin LaHood (R-IL-16) introduced the Residence-Based Taxation for Americans Abroad Act in Congress. Your feedback is essential to improving the bill and increasing its chances of passing.

You can find more about RBT here and fill out the available survey: https://www.democratsabroad.org/new_residency_based_tax_bill_introduced

It was recently reported that during the Biden administration, 16.6 million new jobs have been created.

Even Fox News finally reports on Biden’s success: https://www.facebook.com/reel/624073740180916

Membership clean-up: Each year we update our database by the end of January. You can assist by going to your DA profile (Democrats Abroad), click on account settings, to make any changes. If there are no changes please just click on the red button that says SAVE PROFILE SETTINGS. This will save our volunteers hours of time.
