June 2021 DACR Meeting

San Ramón was one of our 10 voting centers during the 2020 Democrats Abroad Presidential Primary. Judy Fried led this effort and has been involved in getting out the San Ramón vote since 2016. Her enthusiastic efforts have created an important ripple effect all across Costa Rica. In our June 26 meeting, Judy will share her enthusiasm and experiences with the rest of us.

Millions of U.S. Citizens are doing it! In the good old days, getting a book published was possible only for the very talented or the well-connected. In our new electronic world, anyone with the desire and a laptop can self-publish an ebook or paperback. Here in Costa Rica, there are several writers’ groups where authors or potential authors meet periodically to read excerpts of their writings and to discuss the ins and outs of getting their works published. Typically, they write short stories, novels, children’s books, or memoirs. Several members of DACR have self-published their own books. One of the oldest and most successful groups here is called the Costa Rican Writers’ Group, moderated by the talented Bob Brashears. In our  meeting, Bob will talk about the group and explain how you can get started as a self-published author.

DATE: Saturday, June 26

TIME: 10 am

May 2021 DACR Meeting

For our May meeting we will feature DACR’s TEAM GRECIA. They are super-organized, hold monthly meetings to discuss political/social issues, and have led the way in voter registration and the Global Presidential Primary.

In January Grecia Team founder Angie Vachio was elected Vice-Chair of DACR. The new Grecia Team Chair is Lydia Barrow-Hankins, who got involved almost from the moment she and her husband Ron set foot in Costa Rica.

In light of Vice President Kamala Harris’s upcoming visit (June 7-8) to Mexico and Guatemala to address the causes of the immigration crisis on the U.S.-Mexican border, Grecia Team member Don Voelker will give us an update on U.S. aid to the Northern Triangle and its past successes and failures.

Save the Date. On September 29th we will have another large event at Tin Jo to collect ballots and last-minute registrations. Two years ago, 100 people attended, and we hope to match that turnout. We are excited that Bertilla Baker has agreed to perform. She appeared on Broadway and in national tours. She has sung gospel and jazz with various groups and bands. And more exciting news: Jim Thompson’s brother Jeffrey Thompson will be here and will be joining Bertilla. They have performed together on Broadway in the past and are good friends. It’s going to be a sellout! An invitation to reserve your space will be sent out soon! Seating will be limited.

Where are the children? Hear the experts

Families belong together!
In April, the Trump White House issued a policy to separate children from their parents, relatives, or other adults who accompanied them in crossing the border, whether apprehended during an illegal crossing or, in numerous reported cases, legally presenting themselves for asylum. The policy involved prosecuting all adults who were detained at the U.S.–Mexico border, sending the parents to federal jails, and placing children and infants under the supervision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. According to government officials, the policy led to the separation of more than 3,000 children from their parents.

We are all outraged at the separation of families at the border. To understand the situation at hand and what actions we can take, we have invited two experts on immigration policy and human rights, Roeland de Wilde and Veena Siddharth. Each one will give a presentation, followed by a Q&A session and discussion.
