UPCOMING:
Save the Date. On September 29th we will have another large event at Tin Jo to collect ballots and last-minute registrations. Two years ago, 100 people attended, and we hope to match that turnout. We are excited that Bertilla Baker has agreed to perform. She appeared on Broadway and in national tours. She has sung gospel and jazz with various groups and bands. And more exciting news: Jim Thompson’s brother Jeffrey Thompson will be here and will be joining Bertilla. They have performed together on Broadway in the past and are good friends. It’s going to be a sellout! An invitation to reserve your space will be sent out soon! Seating will be limited.

JORGE JIMENEZ BIO:

Mr. Jimenez holds a doctorate in marine ecology. His experience in has made him a researcher at the School of Biological Sciences, member of the Academic Postgraduate Committee, and coordinator of the Mangrove Forest Ecology and Management Program. His experience in mangrove ecology has been published in several maps, technical reports, scientific articles, and books.

ABOUT MARVIVA:

MarViva is an organization that works on marine conservation. They focus on political advocacy, interactive processes, multi-sector alliances, and the use of communication tools to promote policies and standards, raise awareness and encourage changes of attitude regarding marine wildlife conservation. MarViva currently operates in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Panamá as a non-profit NGO.

Where are the children? Hear the experts

Families belong together!
In April, the Trump White House issued a policy to separate children from their parents, relatives, or other adults who accompanied them in crossing the border, whether apprehended during an illegal crossing or, in numerous reported cases, legally presenting themselves for asylum. The policy involved prosecuting all adults who were detained at the U.S.–Mexico border, sending the parents to federal jails, and placing children and infants under the supervision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. According to government officials, the policy led to the separation of more than 3,000 children from their parents.

We are all outraged at the separation of families at the border. To understand the situation at hand and what actions we can take, we have invited two experts on immigration policy and human rights, Roeland de Wilde and Veena Siddharth. Each one will give a presentation, followed by a Q&A session and discussion.

"Immigrants for Sale" Don't miss this film! Oct 28th

October 28th, 2017 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

Little Theatre Group in San Rafael de Escazú

The plight of Immigrants in the US

Documentary film - Immigrants for Sale
The detention of migrants has become a multi-billion-dollar industry in which immigrants are sold to the highest bidder and traded like mere products. Private corporations run over 200 facilities that offer over 150,000-bed spaces and rake in a total profit of close to five billion dollars per year. These detention centers get paid for the number of people that are in the center per night. There is no incentive to speed up the legal processes and let the detainees leave the facility

Q&A with Immigration Lawyer – Amy Novick – via Skype from Washington D.C.

Amy has been involved with immigration and nationality law and policy for more than 25 years. She served as Deputy Director of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) where she directed the Association’s extensive immigration education program. Start thinking about questions you can ask.

Costa Rican Dreamer to share his experiences.

DACR at Pride Parade

Stevesbue_zps57ce9345.jpg_c100.jpg

On June 25th, Movimiento Diversidad organized a massive Pride Parade in downtown San José. Costa Rican government officials, corporations, and a handful of embassies joined in support of the LGBT community through Avenida Segunda and Paseo Colón. A record-breaking 80,000 people marched last Sunday.

Democrats Abroad Costa Rica was present at the event. DACR proudly displayed a rainbow colored Classic VW Bus. Hundreds of people took pictures of the bus and were given Resistance Summer postcards.

If you are interested in seeing pictures of the parade, please visit the following link: https://www.facebook.com/pg/DemocratsAbroadCR/photos/?tab=album&album_id=839899462831565

We plan to participate next year. Stay tuned!
