What does it cost to attend the Democratic National Convention?

Democrats Abroad Delegates to the 2020 Democratic National Convention are obligated to attend the convention in person, from July 13 to July 16 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While there are no fees or dues required to become a delegate, Democrats Abroad does not cover the cost of flights, hotels or incidentals for the national convention. We have provided a general estimate for your reference.

Estimated costs of attending are estimated below in US dollars:

Airfare to Milwaukee: Varies, depending on your location

Hotels for 5 nights: $400-$900+

Food and Incidentals: $500

Airfare: Most major airlines, including Delta, United, and American fly to Milwaukee. Please be aware that, while Milwaukee is an international airport, there are limited airports outside the US offering direct flights. Delegates looking for alternatives might also consider Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, located approximately 80 miles south of Milwaukee.

Hotels: Democrats Abroad’s hotel block will be located at Radisson Hotel Milwaukee Airport, although delegates are free to seek alternative accommodations. This hotel block is limited but offers enough rooms for the estimated delegation, with a standard room rate of $179 per night. Costs vary by hotel, and attendees are encouraged to book early and be aware that prices will be higher than normal due to the convention.

Food and Incidentals: In addition to travel costs, plan to spend at least $75 a day on food and $25 a day on incidentals. The convention schedule will likely keep you at the arena, where food will be expensive.

Making Plans: We understand and appreciate delegates’ willingness to cover their own costs to represent Democrats Abroad at the convention, and we encourage everyone to book as early as possible after delegates have been confirmed (by May 17, 2020).

Financial Support: While Democrats Abroad operates on a very limited budget and is unable to provide reimbursements for convention attendees, we hope that this does not deter you from attending or running for a delegate position. In the past, delegates have found creative opportunities to fund raise for their personal travel costs, such as by starting a GoFundMe.
