Call for Nominations: Help Shape the Future of Democrats Abroad BC Mainland


It’s election season for Democrats Abroad! As we prepare for the 2026 midterms and beyond, we need leaders who can help our BC Mainland Chapter grow, adapt, and build agile resistance to chaos in the face of unprecedented challenges. This is your opportunity to step into leadership and make a difference during one of the most critical times in modern history.

The Democrats Abroad BC Mainland Nominations and Elections Committee (NEC) is now accepting nominations for our chapter’s 2025-2027 Board. Join us in fortifying our movement, creating strategies to meet the unexpected, and mobilizing Americans abroad to defend democracy.

In this year’s elections, we are calling for dedicated candidates in the following offices: Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, General Secretary, Communications Officer, Policy Officer, Programs & Events Manager, Volunteer Manager, and Membership Secretary. Please see the brief descriptions below and refer to the Chapter Bylaws for more information.

Positions Up for Election

We are calling for dedicated candidates to fill the following voting positions:

Chair

The Chair serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the chapter. Responsibilities include:

  • Presiding over all general and Executive Committee meetings.
  • Overseeing all chapter activities and ensuring alignment with Democrats Abroad goals.
  • Representing the chapter to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serving as the primary spokesperson for DAC-BC Mainland.
  • Ensuring access to and proper maintenance of chapter documentation, including financial statements and meeting minutes.

Vice Chair

The Vice Chair collaborates closely with the Chair to ensure all responsibilities are executed effectively. Duties include:

  • Acting in the Chair’s stead in their absence or as designated.
  • Presiding over meetings in the Chair’s absence.
  • Assuming the Chair’s role if the position becomes vacant.
  • Ensuring alignment with the gender diversity requirement (must be of a different gender than the Chair).

Treasurer

The Treasurer manages the chapter’s finances and ensures compliance with legal and organizational requirements. Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Creating monthly and annual financial reports for the Executive Committee and AGM.
  • Assisting with fundraising strategies and maintaining transparency in financial activities.

General Secretary

The General Secretary maintains the chapter’s administrative records. Key duties include:

  • Recording and filing minutes for all general and Executive Committee meetings.
  • Ensuring minutes are distributed to the Executive Committee for review and approval.
  • Submitting election results and AGM minutes to the country committee.

Communications Officer

The Communications Officer oversees the chapter’s communication strategy and execution. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing media relations, social media, and internal member communications.
  • Developing strategies to engage members and promote chapter activities.
  • Coordinating with the Executive Committee to align messaging with chapter goals.

Policy Officer

The Policy Officer advises the chapter on U.S. policy matters, focusing on the unique perspective of Americans abroad. Duties include:

  • Recommending opportunities for members to engage in U.S. policy discussions.
  • Developing initiatives to educate and involve members in relevant policy matters.
  • Forming and leading a policy committee as needed.

Programs & Events Manager

The Programs & Events Manager is responsible for organizing chapter events. Key duties include:

  • Planning a minimum of three annual events (e.g., educational seminars, social gatherings, and community outreach).
  • Developing relationships with local and cross-border communities to enhance engagement.
  • Supporting initiatives that attract and retain members.

Volunteer Manager

The Volunteer Manager develops and implements strategies to recruit and organize volunteers for chapter activities. Responsibilities include:

  • Matching volunteers with roles that suit their skills and interests.
  • Building and maintaining a robust volunteer network.
  • Collaborating with the Programs & Events Manager to support outreach initiatives.

Membership Secretary (Pending bylaw approval)

The Membership Secretary focuses on member engagement and growth. Duties include:

  • Maintaining and updating membership records.
  • Coordinating outreach efforts to attract new members and retain existing ones.
  • Collaborating with the Communications Officer and Volunteer Manager to enhance member engagement.

How to Nominate

Deadline: Midnight, Friday, January 24, 2025.

To Submit a Nomination:
Send an email to [email protected] with:

  1. The nominee’s name, the position they are running for, and a brief statement (up to 500 words) on their qualifications and vision for the role.
  2. A confirmation from the nominee that they:
  • Are a U.S. citizen residing in Canada.
  • Are a registered member of Democrats Abroad and the BC Mainland Chapter.
  • Adhere to the principles of the Democratic Party and Democrats Abroad.

Nominations may also be made from the floor at the AGM if a position is uncontested.


Key Dates

  • January 7, 2025: Nominations open.
  • January 25, 2025: Nominations close at midnight.
  • February 9, 2025: Election notice published.
  • February 18, 2025: Electronic ballots distributed (includes proposed bylaw changes).
  • March 8, 2025: Proxy submission deadline.
  • March 10, 2025: Voting closes at 11:59 PM PST.
  • March 11, 2025: Annual General Meeting (AGM) and announcement of results. RSVP now.
