NEC Report for the Toronto Chapter Board Elections March 2023
The Call for Candidates went out from the NEC by email and was posted on the Toronto page of DemocratsAbroad.org on Jan 13th. Candidate Statements were due by Jan 28th. Notice of AGM, Elections, Candidate Statements and ballots were emailed and posted on the same website on Feb 12th. Ballots were due by Mar 14 12:01 a.m and will be destroyed June 12th.
The following positions received a single nomination and normally would have been acclaimed at the AGM, March 14th
Chair: Dianna English
Co Vice-Chair (male): Lee Strickland
Treasurer: Celia Campbell
Secretary: Colleen Mahaffie
Member-at-Large - Durham Region: Lucia Lloyd
Member-at-Large - York Region: Marie Kinderman
There are 8 Member-at-Large positions. Nominations for regional members-at-large were treated as acclaimed when the ballot was created and distributed. So that left us with 6 positions and 7 candidates.
However, we had a withdrawal by Marie Kinderman, a regional Member-at-Large, as it became known she did not live in the region of York, but the York neighbourhood in Toronto.
This resulted in a post ballot vacancy for a member-at-large. The NEC agreed to handle this discrepancy by holding an election on the floor of the AGM for the one vacancy created by the withdrawal.
At the AGM the following were acclaimed
Chair: Dianna English
Co Vice-Chair (male): Lee Strickland
Treasurer: Celia Campbell
Secretary: Colleen Mahaffie
Member-at-Large - Durham Region: Lucia Lloyd
At the AGM the teller reported the winners from the ballot
Bella Hazzan
Jacqueline Swartz
Danielle Stampley
Karin Lippert
Yael Glina
Shannon Bassett
At the AGM, the NEC Chair then held an election for the remaining Member-at-Large seat.
Marie Kinderman and Virginia Smith self nominated from the floor and Marie Kinderman won with a show of hands vote.
The NEC Chair called for nominations from the floor for Co-Vice Chair. Joann Sochor was the only nomination and was acclaimed to this position.
