August: an important month in our journey toward sustaining Democracy!


Greetings and Good day to all DA Madrid Members!

This month we would like to point out all the important dates that have made and are making a difference in our journey to improve our Democracy:

  • Social Security Anniversary: On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. The act created a social insurance program designed to pay retired workers age 65 or older a continuing income after retirement .

  • Inflation Reduction Act Anniversary: The Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law by President Gerald Ford on August 16, 1974. The act was designed to combat inflation by giving the President of the United States the power to declare a “national emergency” and impose wage and price controls .

  • Senior Citizens Day: Senior Citizens Day is celebrated on August 20 every year. The day is dedicated to honoring and showing appreciation for the contributions and achievements of senior citizens in society .

  • Women’s Equality Day: Women’s Equality Day is celebrated on August 26 every year. The day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote in 1920 .

  • 60th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech: On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The speech called for an end to racism in the United States and is considered one of the most important speeches in American history .
