The Democrats Abroad Taxation Task Force visited Congressional offices in Washington D.C. from October 20-24 to continue conversations on tax reform for Americans abroad. This report serves as a summary of the meetings attended.
Overall achievements from the door knock included:
- 44 meetings over 5 days
- 26 Democratic offices
- 17 Republican offices
- 20 House offices
- 24 Senate offices
- 1 non-Congressional meeting
Top issues for discussion included:
- Residency Based Taxation
- GILTI
- Combining FBAR & FATCA reporting
- Non-US Pensions tax and reporting treatment
Highlights from the tax door knock include:
- Garnering support for a GILTI exclusion for American abroad small business owners.
- Identifying Democratic co-sponsors for the Residence-Based Taxation for Americans Abroad Act.
- Ongoing discussions on combining FBAR & FATCA reporting
- We delivered nearly 100 constituent tax horror stories to Congressional offices on behalf of DA members
- Given the government shut down, a number of meetings were cancelled but we were also able to pick up additional meetings throughout the week and follow-up virtual meetings after the in-person door knock.
The Taxation Task Force is in ongoing conversations and work on progressing tax legislation for Americans abroad.
