Think Tank on U.S. Politics

Topic for October 1: The GOP's Unshakeable Bond with Trump

If you are concerned about the directions U.S. politics have taken in recent years, you've got company. Dems Abroad Switzerland's Swiss Romande Chapter will host our first deep-dive Political Forum on Restoring the U.S. Political System to Health, on Sunday October 1. At this first session we'll focus on Trump's seeming capture of the Republican Party. Why it that? Is the GOP stronger for it? Is it a threat to Democracy?

With the 2024 primaries and election looming, it's a good time to examine this particular weak point of our political system.

This will be an in-person event, at the Espace Dickens, Lausanne. Although zoom meetings are now the norm, we believe an engaged group meeting in person will allow a deeper and more productive exploration of our topic.

As a participatory event, we recommend that people read political columnists and analysis in advance (eg. NY Times, WaPo, YouTube) and be prepared to present perspectives on what is the unbreakable bond between Trump and a good majority of GOP voters and elected officials. Event leader Bob Piller will provide those who register (below) several links to relevant pieces.

We'll break in the middle for refreshments and chat. Virtual attendance may also be offered for those who can't get to Lausanne. Either way, please sign up below, or email Bob.

We welcome your suggestions for future sessions of this Political series. Please indicate your topic preference, or suggest your own, at our survey form here!
