Walk & Talk on Les Avants Narcissus Trail

A Saturday walk with Democrats Abroad along blossoming narcissus, the wild daffodils that cover the hillsides above Vevey and Montreux in the Spring. The area looks as if it had just snowed! A phenomenon locals call “Neige de Mai”. See history and images at https://www.narcisses.com/.

Details of our walk: We'll begin with a short mountain-train ride departing from the Montreux station to Les Avants. There is very limited parking in Les Avants, especially on May weekends, so we recommend riding with us from Montreux. Get there by train or car, parking is plentiful, see below for some options.

This will be a 2-hour walking loop, approx. 6 km, at a leisurely pace for plenty of photography, with pause for lunch. The nature trail starts at Les Avants explaining the the narcissus history in the area. The village with its air of Belle Epoque is one of Switzerland’s oldest winter sports resorts. Along the path are signs explaining what's around you. Option at the start to take the Sonloup funicular train up to the top, that cuts out the hill climb and is very fun! Total time from Montreux by train to Les Avants, walk, lunch and return to Montreux, approx 4 hours.

What to wear and bring: Wear layers and good walking shoes; we will not be on paved roads but the path is very well maintained, bring walking sticks if you are used to them. Bring your picnic lunch and beverages.

By train: Go to Montreux station. By car: There is public parking at Montreux station garage, and near the quay at the Montreux Market underground.

Meet: Montreux station platform #4 at 10 AM CET. Allow time to buy ticket for 10:20 AM train.
