VMF Statement on Memorial Day 2025

This May 2025 not only encompasses Military Appreciation Month, Armed Forces Week, V-E Day, NYC Fleet Week, and Military Spouse Appreciation Day, it also includes the sacred recognition of Memorial Day. This is a federal holiday of extreme importance to the Democrats Abroad Global Veterans and Military Families (VMF) Caucus and our fellow citizens both stateside and abroad.

First, please have a listen to the VMF Chair provide a few introductory remarks by clicking on the Memorial Day 2025 image here:

As the video commentary references, see below to view the perspectives of several VMF members who offered their thoughts on what Memorial Day means to them. Some of our members are veterans, some are family members to veterans or current service members, some identify as both a veteran and a military family member, and some have no formal military affiliation but are strong allies of the VMF community, and we’re so proud to have them among our members.

For this Memorial Day, please remember to take a moment to honor our fallen service members, and take the extra step of doing something positive and impactful. Some ideas for Memorial Day that individuals can take are:

  • Double check your voter registration status with your home voting state.
  • Lay a wreath at an ABMC cemetery overseas.
  • Send a letter and/or a care package to an Active Duty service member currently deployed.
  • Visit an overseas war memorial where the past contributions of U.S. service members are recognized.
  • Create patriotic arts and crafts, and tag us on social media.
  • Contact your Member of Congress and urge him/her to cosponsor and support H.R. 439, a bill to expand VA Health Care coverage for disabled veterans who live abroad.
  • Shop at a veteran-owned business.
  • Volunteer with the Democrats Abroad Global VMF Caucus, the Democrats Abroad Germany VMF Caucus, the Democrats Abroad France VMF Caucus, or any veterans service organization.
  • Share your (or your loved one’s) military story in our VMF Virtual Museum by contacting us at [email protected].

___________

U.S. citizens living abroad, both civilian and military, are highly encouraged to check your voter registration status and request your ballot for any upcoming elections in your home voting state that you are eligible to vote in.

The VMF Caucus, proudly consisting of veterans, military family members, and strong allies of veterans and military family causes, has a membership of approximately 1,300 members located in dozens of countries.
