VMF Statement on the U.S. Navy’s Upcoming 250th Birthday

The United States Navy was first established on October 13, 1775 (as the Continental Navy), and since then, has protected our homeland nation, patrolled the vast seas, saved countless lives, and fought battles all around the globe. On October 13, 2025, the Democrats Abroad Global Veterans and Military Families (VMF) Caucus will join in celebrating the U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday and calls on all VMF members and other Americans to honor and recognize their numerous achievements over the centuries.

Some of America’s most recognizable names have served in a Navy uniform, including President John F. Kennedy, NASA Astronaut Sunita Williams, NY Yankee Yogi Berra, Hollywood icon Paul Newman, S.E.A.L. sniper Chris Kyle, and countless others. The bravery of these individuals and millions of others has captured the attention of many Americans, young and old, and VMF thanks the Navy for all it has accomplished, all it continues to do, and all those who will also sign up and make a difference in our national security.

If your time permits, VMF encourages participation in activities supporting the U.S. Navy, Navy veterans, and the military-connected community. Possible activities could include actions like sending a care package to a Sailor deployed at seas or stationed overseas, volunteering to perform voter registrations, joining as a member (or auxiliary member) of a veterans service organization, calling someone you know as a “buddy check” on how their mental health is holding up (to prevent veteran suicide), or even making a generous donation to the VMF Caucus.

VMF sincerely wishes the U.S. Navy an outstanding 250th birthday this October 13th!

U.S. citizens living abroad, both civilian and military, are highly encouraged to check your voter registration status and request your ballot for any upcoming elections in your home voting state that you are eligible to vote in.

The Global VMF Caucus, proudly consisting of veterans, military family members, Department of War (DoW) (formerly Department of Defense, or DoD) civilians, and strong allies of veterans and military family causes, has a membership of over 1,400 members located in dozens of countries.
