GWC May / June Newsletter 2022

Anniversary Edition May June 2022 Global Women's Caucus Newsletter

Letter from the Editor

This June, the Global Women’s Caucus celebrates 30 years of sisterhood, progress and growth. Starting at the country-level in France, the Women’s Caucus has grown into a global entity with a mission to mobilize voters and raise a strong unified voice on the issues that impact American women, both stateside and abroad. Our tenets: educate, build community, and promote activism, are the beacons that guide our leaders and members to continue to be active American citizens, regardless of where we live.

Join us June 18th, as we celebrate together from the place it all began. If you can’t join us in Paris, we welcome you to create your own event to discuss the issues and future of the Global Women’s Caucus.

A final note on the state of reproductive rights: We know you are angry. We are angry too. Our democracy and rights are being threatened by only a few, with the lone goal of oppression and control over a female’s right of choice. TAKE THAT ANGER TO THE MIDTERMS! As the GWC continues to grow, we need your help. Join our team for this very important midterm year. Consider volunteering with us, help friends and family register to vote, or donate! Make sure you’re registered to vote in 2022 here!

We hope you enjoy this edition, and we look forward to seeing you at our events!

GWC ACTION UPDATES

Sisters,

This is the moment to act! The abolishing of our right to choose has already arrived and we need to fight back. You can do this by tweeting, calling and emailing your Senators to get them to vote YES for the Women’s Health Protection Act and demonstrate in the streets and on Zoom on May 14th. You can also make a video for our video project which is intended to get out the vote to make sure we vote in a pro-choice Congress for the midterms.

Please contact our team at [email protected] to find out how you can help.

The Violence Against Women action team is proposing a resolution at the DA Annual General Meeting to form a Global Gender-based Violence Task Force. Our hope is that this will provide a clear signal of the importance members place on addressing the issue. It will also provide the basis for a global public relations effort to alert citizens abroad of the problem and to encourage them to vote for Democrats who are committed to being part of the answer.

The 9 million Americans living abroad, and the 93 million Americans traveling internationally during an average year, are too often unaware of the challenges to finding support when it is needed the most and suffer needless harm in the absence of an easily accessible source of assistance.

Trapped Film Poster

Dawn Porter

Dawn Porter is an award-winning filmmaker whose 2013 documentary Gideon’s Army won the Sundance Film Festival Editing Award, the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Award, and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and an Emmy.

TRAPPED goes to the front lines of the controversial battle currently being waged over so-called TRAP laws — Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers — which reproductive rights advocates believe are designed to restrict access to abortion. Told through the eyes of doctors, clinic owners, and staff in Alabama and Texas who are fighting to keep their facilities open, the film reveals the impact of the hundreds of new laws passed since 2011 that set additional standards and regulations for abortion providers. Compliance often requires costly facility modifications or staffing requirements and has resulted in the closure of many clinics.
