DA-Spain January 2024 Newsletter: The Power of People

Message from DA Spain Chair

Kathy Tullos, DA Spain ChairHello! I hope you're staying warm and cozy wherever you are in Spain. Guess where I'm at? I’m in Cincinnati with our grandchildren, where the temperature is currently 12 degrees! Now, you'd think we'd be cozied up in big chairs, wrapped in blankets, sipping hot tea, and reading books. Classic hibernation material, right? Well, think again! Our political engines are heating up!

Dems Abroad Spain is on fire, gearing up for the 2024 elections across the country as we prepare for the Global Presidential Primary (GPP) in March. From welcoming a new precinct in Granada to cranking up a nationwide phone banking campaign, planning movie nights featuring the Capitol chaos and organizing our Annual General Meeting – each chapter is on a roll.

And yes, we're also raising funds! House parties are in the pipeline for both our DA Spain crew and potential new members. Think of it as a political soirée and make time to join in when you're invited. You can also host your own event. We have a “party in a box” with pre-written materials and practical tips to guide you along the way.

Now, we get it – hibernation mode is oh-so-tempting. But folks, it's time to shake off those cozy vibes and join us in the hustle. Check out how you can pitch in on our Volunteer Interest Form. It's not a marathon commitment; even bite-sized efforts count. Together, from our comfy chairs, we can knock out all the get-out-the-vote initiatives I’ve mentioned and more. It's like being part of a snowstorm – each flake might seem small, but together, we're a force!

And hey, don't forget – all DA Spain members are invited to our monthly Executive Committee Zoom meetings. Next one's on February 8 at 7:30 pm CET. Mark your calendars. For the virtual entry ticket, shoot an email to [email protected]. Can't wait to catch you there!

Stay warm, stay woke, and let's make 2024 count!

Kathy Tullos, DA Spain Chair

Many states require that you request your ballot annually. Requesting your ballot takes about 5 minutes. You can also request your GPP ballot at the same time.

DA Spain National and Local Events

We have a highlight of key events going on throughout Spain, but be sure to check out our Events Page to see what else is happening online and within your local chapter cities. New events are added all the time. Bookmark the events page and check back often.

Dialing for Democracy: Be a Phone Banking Hero for DA Spain's Country Calling Campaign
We're cranking up the heat, getting all hyped for the 2024 elections!  The buzz from the Women’s Caucus revolves around our incredible phonebanking efforts! Thanks to the dedication of our chapters and precincts, we now boast a robust team of over 50 volunteer phone bankers for the Spain Country Calling Campaign. If you're eager to join us in this impactful initiative, simply fill out this form, and we'll be in touch soon.

It's crucial to note that phone banking for DA Spain isn't about cold calling. You'll be reaching out to fellow DA Spain members who have happily granted permission to be contacted. Plus, you can do it comfortably from your home via computer, incurring no costs. However, phone banking isn't entirely free! If you'd like to support our cause, consider donating by clicking here. Each call costs approximately $1, and with plans to make nearly 5,000 calls, every contribution counts.

Chapter & Precinct News

Alicante

By Brett Specter

The Alicante chapter had organized an NFL game event for January, aiming to engage our members in a fun setting with the local American football team, the Alicante Thunder. Unfortunately, extreme weather conditions in the US prompted the NFL to make last-minute changes to the game's schedule, leading to the event's cancellation. Don't worry, though – we're resilient, and more events are in the pipeline because expanding our community is a big deal and lots of fun.

Now, here's a sneak peek at what's ahead: a wine-tasting extravaganza! We're ironing out the details with the owner, and once that's locked in, get ready for a grape adventure. Stay tuned for more details via email and on our Facebook page.

Oh, and don't forget about the Super Tuesday GPP – it's knocking on our door! We've got a voting center date for your calendars: March 5 at Sip & Wonder Coffee House in Alicante from noon to 4:00 p.m. Plus, we're cooking up plans for a voter assistance session in the Altea area later that week.

Guess what else? Our chapter is growing – six new members joined the squad last week. Now, that's what we call a good sign!

Barcelona

By Catherine Dexter

International Voter Registration Day Recap:  What an incredible turnout at Cinderella Café & Cocktails on Monday, Jan. 15, as the Barcelona chapter celebrated International Voter Registration Day (IVRD). We had a blast assisting local voters in registering and requesting absentee ballots. With three out of four members of our leadership team having ties to Maryland, discovering a local spot that serves delicious crab cakes added an extra layer of excitement! The owner, also a Maryland voter, was thrilled to collaborate with Democrats Abroad. Expect more engaging events at this fantastic brunch and cocktail venue in the future.

Book Group Afterglow:  Our book group gathered on Jan. 20 to discuss Heather Cox Richardson’s “Democracy Awakening.” It was a resounding success! Joe Biden's recent sighting with a copy under his arm in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, added an extra buzz to our discussion. We were thrilled by the author's interview with him on her excellent Letters from an American blog. It was an engaging and enlightening session, leaving us eagerly anticipating our next literary adventure together.

Global Presidential Primary (GPP) Update:  Our chapter is in full swing preparing for the Global Presidential Primary in March, scheduled for Super Tuesday on March 5 at ESERP Business School. The school, a steadfast supporter of our chapter, has graciously provided facilities for numerous events, including the last GPP in 2016.

We recently hosted a meeting for volunteers on Jan. 23, at which we reminisced about the fantastic team from the 2020 GPP and hope to reconnect with them this time around. Due to unforeseen circumstances after Covid, we lost touch, but we're excited to bring back that camaraderie. Additionally, mark your calendars for a voter-assistance event planned for March 9, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Sitges, at Club de Mar.

Get Out the Vote (GOTV) Movie Night Update:  The monthly film series took a brief hiatus during the holiday season, but we're gearing up for a fantastic return! In February, we plan to screen “I Am Not Your Negro,” a documentary about James Baldwin, in honor of Black History Month. Following that, get ready for “Pelosi in the House” for Women’s History Month in March. Stay tuned for more details and join us for engaging and informative movie nights.

Granada Precinct

By Albion Land

I am pleased to report that Granada is now a precinct within Democrats Abroad Spain. The executive committee voted unanimously last month to approve our request to formalize our efforts.

As fate would have it, this month’s newsletter is coming out the day after our inaugural lunch, so I don’t have the opportunity to share news or photos of it. At this writing, 13 people have signed up for the get-together at Los Naranjos del Valle restaurant in the Lecrín Valley village of Melegís. So look forward to a full report next month.

A few of us granadinos joined folks from the Málaga precinct for lunch in Nerja in December, and I had the opportunity to meet them. So our almuerzo in Melegís will give the rest of us a chance to meet and start getting to know each other.

I am looking forward to ensuring that every one of us has requested our own ballots for this year’s election cycle and to discuss what we can do to support the GOTV campaign.

For those of you who haven’t yet got on board with us, kindly reach out via email at [email protected], join our Facebook group Democrat Voters in Granada, and visit our Granada page on the Democrats Abroad Spain website.

Madrid

By Lucia J. Perez

DA Madrid has been actively progressing on our "Road Ahead," and we're thrilled to share the key highlights of our journey into action. Securing our Voting Center is a significant milestone, and efforts are ongoing to finalize arrangements for our ballot assistance event. Aiming for broader outreach, we've successfully increased our engagement across various Social Media networks. In preparation for our Super Tuesday event, we've appointed two dedicated Voting Center Managers. Deloires Dunn, an exceptional volunteer, is taking the lead in coordinating all entertainment and live music for our Global Presidential Primary (GPP) event, adding a vibrant touch to the occasion. Mark your calendars for Jan. 25, as we're excited to meet members face-to-face for discussions on volunteer recruitment and engagement.

Additionally, we've scheduled a Coffee Hour on Feb. 14, providing a tranquil opportunity for members to connect, share positive experiences, and foster a sense of community. As we continue down this path, DA Madrid is committed to making strides toward our goals and building a stronger, engaged community. Click to read more details and RSVP for the event.

Malaga Precinct

By Carey Ramos

The past month has been a whirlwind for the blossoming Málaga precinct. We were incredibly fortunate to engage with Connor Joseph, the Communications Director for Rep. Abigail Spanberger, gubernatorial candidate for Virginia. In a candid discussion, Connor shared insights on a range of topics, from the events of Jan. 6 to strategies for success in a swing district and state. An intriguing tidbit: Rep. Spanberger's background in national security and the CIA enabled her to anticipate the risks of Jan. 6, leading her to advise her staff to stay home that day.

Our precinct's footprint has expanded beyond central Málaga, as we ventured into Nerja, Torremolinos, and El Palo for events. The Málaga Dems have wasted no time in mobilizing for the cause, with a remarkable 17 volunteers stepping up for phone banking to drive the Get Out the Vote initiative. The energy and commitment shown by our members highlight the growing impact of the Málaga precinct as we continue to strengthen our presence and actively contribute to the democratic process.

For additional information, kindly reach out to us via email at [email protected], join our Facebook group Democratic Voters in Málaga, or visit our Malaga page on the Democrats Abroad Spain website at. Let us unite, make a difference, and navigate the path to a stronger democracy together.

Sevilla

By Kevin Dodson

Autumn has proven to be a dynamic season for Democrats Abroad in Sevilla. In an effort to enhance accessibility for our community, the chapter strategically alternated the timing of its monthly First Friday events between late mornings and late afternoons, catering to individuals with varying work schedules. November marked the inauguration of our First Friday at 5, drawing a robust attendance of approximately 20 individuals. We were honored to host Jim Mercereau from the Madrid chapter, who provided valuable insights into the activities and opportunities within Democrats Abroad. His presentation stimulated a lively discussion on political matters.

Responding to members' expressed interest in delving into Spanish politics, Dr. Catalina Castillon, an esteemed chapter member and Emerita Professor of Spanish at Lamar University in Texas, spoke on "The Spanish Transition to Democracy" at the Circulo Mercantil on Nov. 13. The event drew more than 30 attendees, including guests from Cádiz.

Looking ahead to December, our chapter is excited to introduce a new book club, commencing with a discussion on Naomi Klein's latest work, "Doppelganger." Additionally, Leora Glasgow will lead a discussion on the second episode of the podcast "The Land That Has Never Been Yet," building on the engaging conversation sparked by the first episode of the 1619 Project podcast last June.

In organizational strides, the chapter has expanded its social media footprint on Democrats Abroad Sevilla, welcoming three new members — Elizabeth Bond, Leora Glasgow, and Kevin Dodson — to its social media team and Instagram account. Elizabeth will also serve as the press contact for the chapter. During our November organizational meeting, planning commenced for the Global Presidential Primary scheduled for March.

We look forward to the continued engagement of our members and the impactful initiatives that lie ahead for Democrats Abroad Sevilla.

Valencia

By Georgia Grossman

Arnold LaskyWith heavy hearts, Democrats Abroad Valencia bids a poignant farewell to our dear First Friday Coffee member, Arnold Lasky, who passed away on Dec. 22. If you've been part of these gatherings in recent years, you likely encountered Arnold — whether it was his sharp New York City wit or his ever-present smile that left an impression. Arnold brought an energy to our gatherings, always posing challenging questions and ensuring lively conversations. His absence will be deeply felt, and we extend our condolences to his family and friends.

In the spirit of camaraderie, our Third Thursday Happy Hour is on the move! This month, we invite you to join us at Stone Castle Brewery in Cabanyal on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. Come explore the brewery and savor the delightful tapa that accompanies every beer. Let's raise a glass in memory of Arnold and continue the spirit of connection that he so cherished. Details can be found on our Facebook page.

American artists in Valencia can showcase their talents and connect with a diverse community at the Valencia Global Presidential Primary on March 5, 2:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Artists, please follow the link to participate in the display. Artwork will be displayed at the Bloom Gallery VLC on March 5. Celebrate the richness of American culture through our talented artists. Save the date for an inspiring event uniting creativity and civic engagement!

Caucus News

Women's Caucus

By Doris Stanger

In this campaign season, two paramount issues directly concern women's rights. First, we're pushing for the publication of the ERA, Equal Rights Amendment, a century after its introduction. To make a meaningful impact, we need your voice! Use this link to email, call, or tweet your two senators and your representative. Feel free to customize the email template, and don't forget to add your name. It's a simple step — just enter your US voting address, add your name, and send to all three in one go.

The second crucial issue is reproductive justice, ensuring that women have the freedom to choose what to do with their own bodies. Explore this link, Reproductive Justice, for more information and find out how you can collaborate and contribute!

The Women’s Caucus is also making waves with its leadership of the Spain Country Calling Campaign, rallying over 50 dedicated volunteer phone bankers. If you're keen to get involved, simply fill out the form and be part of this impactful initiative. Noteworthy: it's not cold calling – you'll connect with DA Spain members who've given permission to be contacted, all from the comfort of your home. To support the cause, donations are welcomed here, with each call costing around $1, and a target of nearly 5,000 calls. Every contribution counts!

The Women’s Caucus welcomes assistance in any capacity, big or small. Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]. Together, let's make a difference!

LGBTQ+ Caucus

By John Murphy & Hal Moskowitz

The DA Madrid LGBTQ+ Caucus launches into 2024 with plans for a special Presidents Day Trivia event to take place in Madrid on Feb. 19.  More details will be forthcoming.  This event follows the Christmas and New Year’s holiday break and our successful House Party in late October in Delicias.  That event welcomed an encouraging number of Americans in Madrid who had never been to a DA event before.

The caucus will also be reaching out to American college campuses in Madrid in February to encourage students to vote in any upcoming special elections — such as the special election on Feb. 13 to replace the disgraced Republican George Santos in NY-3.  The caucus is also planning to support our GPP in March and advance planning for in-person and virtual events in April and May.

Of course, with Pride on the horizon in June, we are busily organizing our activities to encourage Rainbow Registration (voter registration) events around this annual month-long celebration.  Please contact us if you have any great ideas or would like to assist in our efforts.

DA Spain’s LGBTQ+ Caucus  was created to increase visibility for Democrats Abroad within the community abroad and help them register to vote.  The Caucus strives to achieve this goal through outreach, periodic events and general support for DAS activities.

If you would like to join our caucus and/or for more information, please reach out to us at [email protected]. All are welcome!!

Navigating the Political Battlefield:
Lessons from Past and Strategies for the Future
By Dan Solon, Barcelona

Dan Solon, BarcelonaMichelle Obama, responding to Republican smear attacks during her husband's presidency, famously commented, "When they go low, we go high." While this sentiment remains admirable, in a year marked by MAGA-fueled falsehoods across various social media platforms, it may not be a winning strategy for the Democratic Party in the upcoming November elections.

Reflecting on the contested Florida ballot chaos in the 2000 election, in which a Supreme Court ruling handed electoral results and the presidency to George W. Bush over Al Gore, one political commentator succinctly summarized the outcome: "The Democrats brought a knife to a gunfight." This lesson underscores the necessity for Democrats, the U.S. public, and our allies worldwide to avoid taking unnecessary risks in the face of high stakes.

Recent news reports indicate that pragmatic and politically experienced Trump supporters have strategically organized to navigate potential administrative chaos. They have assembled teams of experienced loyalists knowledgeable about government operations, forming a "Deep State" in waiting. This group is prepared to take control of the levers essential for effective administration, planning a "Schedule F" to replace experienced civil servants with MAGA loyalists. This approach mirrors the Federalist Society's conveyor belt of right-wing lawyers, ready to fill federal judgeships, now extended to the Executive branch for a potential Trump second term.

The Biden re-election team must expose these plans as a roadmap for the authoritarian replacement of our current governance system. Despite its imperfections, including the anti-democratic structures of the Senate and Electoral College, our Constitution has sustained the nation since 1789. Under normal circumstances, facts would triumph over fantasies, but the toxic combination of Fox News, local talk radio, dark money, and unregulated social media has disrupted the flow of accurate information. Increasing distrust, especially among younger voters, poses a dangerous threat to long-standing institutions.

While the facts favor the Democratic side, the corrosive influence of misinformation has sown disbelief and apathy, endangering the political process. A strong, aggressive presentation of the nation's true reality is imperative. President Biden's recent campaign trail appearances signal a proactive stance, but a robust effort is needed to communicate the positive economic indicators, including slowing inflation, improving employment data, and a resurging manufacturing sector.

A practical suggestion is for Democrats worldwide to collectively wish Donald Trump a Happy 78th Birthday starting on June 14. This gesture, with best wishes for permanent retirement from political activity, would respond to continual MAGA references to Joe Biden's age. Reminding the media of Trump's age and his demonstrated unfitness for the Oval Office could serve as a strategic counterpoint.
