August brings us close to the end of the 2026 primary season. By the time the month closes, most states and territories will have chosen their candidates for November. But “mostly over” is not over. As of the current primary calendar, four state primaries remain in September: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Delaware.

For Black voters abroad, this is a moment to stay alert. Primaries shape our choices in November. They determine who moves forward, who speaks for our communities, and who will be accountable for voting rights, economic justice, education, health care, reproductive freedom, climate, housing, safety, and democracy itself.
This month, we also want every overseas voter to know about the Federal Write In Absentee Ballot, often called the FWAB. It is an emergency ballot for overseas voters when there is a chance your official ballot will not arrive back to your home state in time.
Democrats Abroad advises overseas voters to send in the Federal Post Card Application each calendar year, confirm receipt with their Local Election Official (which you can find via this page), and use the FWAB when timing is tight.
If your official ballot arrives after you send the FWAB, complete and return the official ballot too. And don’t worry! Only one ballot will be counted.
Primary season may be almost over, but our responsibility is not. Go to votefromabroad.org today and find out how to track your ballot. Use the FWAB when needed. Then help someone else do the same.
