VMF Artwork: Photography by Kee Evans

This stunning photograph, taken on August 8, 2018, by Kee Adams Evans (of Democrats Abroad Guatemala and Democrats Abroad’s Global Veterans and Military Families Caucus), shows the Navajo Code Talkers Monument, located in the Veterans’ Memorial Park adjacent to the Navajo Nation headquarters, in Window Rock, Arizona. The Monument, sculpted by Oreland Joe, was erected in 2010.

Background on the significance of this monument: According to a statement by Marine Corporal Trystan Taft in 2022, “Eighty years ago, the Marine Corps originally enlisted 29 Navajo men to develop a special code in which sensitive information was sent and deciphered during the battles of the Pacific in World War II. As the war went on, it is estimated that more than 400 Navajos were trained in the code. Six U.S. Marines who participated in this year’s celebration are Navajo Nation members who had never met each other before, but quickly found common ground through their shared military service and Navajo heritage.”
