Call Congress and support fair taxation for Americans abroad

The Democrats Abroad Taxation Task Force has just returned home from door knocking Congress this week about Residency Based Taxation (RBT) and the disastrous transition taxes which come into effect this June.

As a strong followup, we need members of Congress to hear from Americans abroad about the importance of the tax reform we are pushing. This support is crucial for persuading Congress to enact our reform recommendations.

Please call, email or write Congress to help drive home the message that Americans abroad care about this legislation and will be voting for those who support our suggested reform.

While we were on the Hill we met with members on both sides of the aisle and in both the Senate and the House. A few key takeaways:
Residency Based Taxation (RBT)

Rep George Holding's (R-NC) RBT proposal is now with the House Ways and Means Committee legislation drafters. We expect to see another draft shortly. The proposal will then be sent to the Joint Committee on Taxation for scoring, and Holding will start working on collecting co-sponsors.

Democrats Abroad is currently gathering information on Congressional members interested in supporting this important reform for Americans abroad.

Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

We also spent a good deal of time discussing the new “transition taxes” which are set to have a devastating impact on Americans abroad who own companies.

Our discussions with lawmakers confirm what we already knew to be true – GOP tax writers’ only goal was to push through a tax cut for large corporations as quickly as possible. That so many drafting errors and oversights were the result is no surprise; but what is surprising – and appalling - is that Congressional Republicans have no plans to introduce a “corrections bill” any time soon. Our only option is to hammer them until they do. Please join in this important campaign demanding a transition tax remedy.
