DA Spain Launches Inaugural Country Calling Campaign - Volunteers & Donations Needed

DA Spain is launching its inaugural country calling campaign. That is, we will only call DA members who live in Spain. This post is our call for volunteers and donations.

Calling DA Spain members in 2024 to:

  • Remind them to register to vote. January 15th is International Register to Vote Day!  Click here to add a ballot request reminder to your own calendar.
  • Encourage them to participate in the Global Presidential Primary (GPP). The more people who participate, the more delegates Democrats Abroad can send to the Presidential Primary, where we can make our voices and concerns heard.

Our goal is to call 4,900 DA Spain members by Memorial Day, May 27th, 2024, and raise $5,000 to pay for calls.

We're asking for your help to achieve our goals. You can help make phone calls, which is fun and rewarding. Or you can make a donation - 100% of your donation goes to DA phonebanking initiatives. To cover our phone banking expenses we are asking for $1.00 per call.

Ultimately, our goal is to increase voter registration and participation by 10% for the 2024 elections. Check out our newsletter on the DA Spain News page to keep an eye on our progress!

Why it matters:  Overseas votes matter!

Only 3.4%  percent of overseas voters vote - we need to increase overseas participation!

According to the 2022 Federal Voting Assistance Program Report to Congress only 3.4% of U.S. citizens living overseas voted in 2022, down from 2020. Of those overseas voters who didn't vote, 72% said it was because they couldn't figure the process, with a huge 94% of 18-34 year-olds citing this reason.

The more overseas voters who participate in elections, the more our concerns that are heard by Washington on issues like: double taxation, having overseas bank accounts, the right to Medicare coverage outside of the US, and more.

Even with that low level of participation, the overseas vote has made a difference in battleground states like Georgia and Arizona.

The Biden/Harris Administration has gotten significant infrastructure projects going, cut medication costs, created jobs, and reduced carbon emissions. Republicans opposed all of this progress. Our votes will help to keep these excellent measures alive!

You Can Help!

Sign up for Phonebanking!

  • Phonebanking IS NOT cold calling! We only call members who have given us their permission to be contacted.
  • Phonebanking is done from the comfort of your home, on your computer, with no cost to you.
  • Your time commitment to phonebanking is up to you!
  • Phonebanking is the single most effective way to reach potential voters in an election year. It has been effective in reminding eligible voters to take the necessary steps, not only to register, but to request and send in their ballots - and then make sure they're counted!

We hope to contact all DA Spain members by Memorial Day, 2024. Calls on our Spain Country Campaign will continue after the GPP in March. Then phonebankers are needed worldwide leading up to ballot day in the fall. After you have done the training, Democrats Abroad will be glad for any time you can spare, right through Election Day.

Testimonials from Others:

Lisa Berger, Vice Chair of the Barcelona chapter and Voting Rep.:  Although I'm basically shy and don't like calling people I don't know, I've found it to be such a rewarding experience to gently nudge Americans who aren't as aware of deadlines and procedures as I now am, and the impact Democratic votes abroad have had recently on election results and  to inform them that for example they can legally vote in mid-term elections or special elections, and in some states, all local elections. Some people even thank me for calling them!

Cathy Cleaver, GOTV Organizer, DA Spain and Vice Chair of the Valencia Chapter:  Phone banking is an excellent way to connect with voters living abroad and give them the information they need to ensure that their vote will count. Sometimes the call serves as an important reminder but other times, when voters have questions about how they can access and return their ballot, the call can mean the difference between a person voting or not voting.  Every call and every vote counts!

Kathy Tullos, Chair Democrats Abroad Spain:  Phone banking was surprisingly easy and fun. I mostly got voice mail but did have a couple of really lovely conversations. One older woman was especially grateful for the reminder, and her enthusiasm for voting stays with me to this day. And in another call, I talked with a man who’d grown up near me in Texas. We commiserated about the terrible state of politics in Texas. I enjoyed the experience a lot!

WHY Country Phonebanking?  Read the experiences of other countries:

DA Austria:  Austria has found in-country CallHub campaigns to be invaluable! Through in-country calls we’ve uncovered and discovered real gems among our membership — talented musicians for events, generous donors, ready volunteers, and of course the grateful voter. Definitely worth the effort! - Jen Rakow-Stepper

DA Mexico:  In Mexico, our country calling campaign activated voters in ways that other outreached simply didn't. Mexico is a large country and our members are scattered far and wide, so calling was a very valuable way to spur them to request their ballots and ultimately to vote. Even those who lived close to our main cities found the extra push they needed to move forward. - David Shallenberger
