The Democrats Abroad Taxation Task Force visited Congressional offices in Washington D.C. from May 28-30 to continue conversations on tax reform for Americans abroad. This report serves as a summary of the meetings attended.
Overall achievements from the door knock included:
- 19 meetings over 3 days
- 5 Democratic offices
- 12 Republican offices
- 7 House offices
- 9 Senate offices
- 2 non-Congressional meetings
Top issues for discussion included:
- GILTI and its impact on small and medium sized American business owners abroad
- Residency Based Taxation
- FBAR reform
- Developing an exclusion from PFICs so middle income Americans abroad can invest for their futures
Highlights from the meetings include:
- Getting a GILTI exclusion for Americans abroad in the upcoming reconciliation bill.
- Identifying a Senate champion for reintroduction of the Residence-Based Taxation for Americans Abroad Act.
- Ongoing discussions on FBAR reform.
- We delivered one pagers to over 60 offices on RBT, GILTI, PFIC, and FBAR.
- Congress was on recess this week, but we were able to confirm a number of virtual meetings in the following weeks after the in-person door knock.
The Taxation Task Force will return to Washington DC in October to continue conversations and work on progressing tax legislation for Americans abroad.
