The Black liberators of the Netherlands - Black History Month Talk

Join us. All are welcome.
In honor of Black History Month, learn about 172 African-American soldiers who are buried at Margraten, the American military cemetery in South Limburg where 8,301 Americans are buried and 1,772 names are on the Wall of the Missing. Buried here is also Pvt. 1st Class Willie F. James - Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Every grave is adopted by local families and most of the locals have connected with the families of “their” soldiers. For reasons, economic and otherwise, this is not true for the African-American soldiers. Our guest speaker, Mieke Kirkels has authored three books and works with the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress and here with blackliberators.nl to change this and to tell the stories that must be told.

900,000 African Americans served in the US Army during WWII.
