Roberta Enschedé is a member of Democrats Abroad Netherlands and a champion of pro-veteran causes. She took the photograph below of this plaque while on a trip to Wereth, Belgium. At this easy-to-miss location in a rural area is a memorial to the “Wereth Eleven,” in reference to eleven African-American soldiers who were tortured and killed by Nazis during World War II. The soldiers’ story is explained in more detail in an article provided by the U.S. Embassy in Belgium from 2022.
Roberta travels to this eastern Belgian location whenever she can and ensures she has time to pay her respects to our nation’s fallen servicemembers. In addition, she also visits other significant military locations such as the remembrance memorial in Malmedy, Belgium – the site of another massacre of U.S. soldiers that can only be described as Nazi war crimes. Whenever she visits the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten or is near another American cemetery, Roberta takes the time to walk around and reflect, especially on the enormous sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes.
Roberta is committed to remembering all our veterans - those who live and those who never grew old. Fortunately, she has taken many photos over the years of these important locations in Europe, and the Veterans and Military Families Caucus looks forward to sharing more of her photography in the coming days.

U.S. citizens living abroad, both civilian and military, are highly encouraged to check your voter registration status and request your ballot for any upcoming elections in your home voting state that you are eligible to vote in.
