The poem shown below is a poem written by Malaika Kusumi, a family member to several veterans and a member of the Democrats Abroad Global Veterans and Military Families (VMF) Caucus. The author is a resident of Germany and votes in California.
In this work titled "Censured But Not Silenced," Malaika was inspired to write the poem below after witnessing U.S. Representative Al Green (D-TX-9) stand up and protest in Congress. Rep. Green is an elder statesman currently serving in the House of Representatives and has been a champion legislator in protecting First Amendment rights.
According to Malaika:
"I loved it. They threw him out, but he yelled, ‘censured but not silenced.‘ He did that on two separate occasions. So I wrote this for him and sent it to his office as a thank you. I wanted to recognize the congressman not only for his public service, but also for his support of those who have worn the uniform. His efforts to support veterans through housing initiatives, recognition of service, and advocacy for those who have sacrificed for this country remind us that honoring the military is not only about the battlefield — it is also about caring for those who come home. This poem is offered in appreciation for that spirit of service and support."
In 2024, Malaika had the privilege of meeting Representative Green. With her poem reflecting on that powerful experience observing the congressman refusing to stay silent while Republicans rubber-stamp the MAGA extremist agenda, the VMF Caucus is pleased to share Malaika’s poem within the VMF Virtual Art Gallery.
