LGBT Stadtfest Wrap-Up

Sunday marked our last day at Stadtfest, the annual open air LGBTQ festival featuring live music, food, drink, and a wide array of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender projects, groups and organizations. Nestled in the sea of tents and people stood the Democrats Abroad booth, where visitors spun ‚ÄúThe Wheel of Democracy‚ÄĚ that offered prizes for answering bizarre trivia questions about the United States. Among all the joy and celebration, Americans and non-Americans alike inevitably expressed their sense of fear over the implications of Trump‚Äôs presidency and the uncertainty of his impact in global politics. However, Stadtfest served as a testimony to the resilience of communities whose livelihood and well being are endangered by the rise in right wing sentiment globally. Stadtfest celebrated visibility, and the right to exist and thrive without fear.

Although we lost our tent Saturday night to a powerful thunderstorm, volunteers rallied that night and the following morning to make do with what we had.  We chatted with many folks who expressed excitement about being proactive in the U.S. government through voting despite being geographically far. A big thank you to our volunteers this weekend who helped make our outreach efforts successful and we look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming events posted on our webpage!

ūüćĽSchleusenkrug pub night ūüĆąLGBT Stadtfest this weekendūüéČ

It's a busy and exciting week here in Berlin. We hope we'll see you at pub night at Schleusenkrug in Tiergarten tonight (Wednesday).

Democrats Abroad Berlin is thrilled to participate in the Lesbisch-Schwules Stadtfest in Schöneberg again this weekend! We will have a booth on both days where we’ll mingle with festival attendees, sell DA swag, and reach out Americans living in Berlin. It's fun to be right in the middle of street fest, and the atmosphere is amazing with hundreds of thousands of visitors over the course of the weekend.

How you can help

‚ĖļVolunteer for a few hours this weekend (mobile-friendly) with a friend to reach out to other Americans living overseas. We especially need more volunteers in the evenings, and we promise: it's a great time!

Together with our friends from American Voices Abroad Berlin and the Coalition Berlin, a large crowd gathered on Friday in front of the U.S. embassy to take a stand against the Trump administration's outrageous and horrific treatment of migrant children and families seeking refuge. ‚Ė∑Take a look at some photos from the vigilūüēĮ

Sponsor a Runner For Democracy!

Democrats Abroad made a tremendous effort in 2018 to get out the vote (GOTV), especially through our use of phonebanking. Our wonderful volunteer callers don't get paid, but the system we use for phonebanking as well as the platform we use to run the organization cost money. In order to prepare for our GOTV efforts for the 2020 election, consider sponsoring a runner in this year's "Running for Democracy" half-marathon and 10K runs in Mannheim on May 11th, 2019. Immediate action is needed to protect our environment and to drastically decrease carbon emissions. Facing this imminent threat brings up the question: what can I do?

We're excited to welcome special guests Georg Kössler, Green politician (MdA) in the Berlin state parliament (Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin), spokesperson on the climate, environment, fair trade, and club culture for the German Green Party in Berlin, and Lubomila Jordanova from Plan A, a data-driven action platform in the fight against climate change.

Calling for Virginia: 1 Vote Flips the State Legislature!

The majority in the Virginia state legislature was decided last election by a coin-toss. This had real repercussions, like the deciding vote on ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment (guaranteeing women's rights in the Constitution) being decided by a Republican (spoil alert, it was voted down).

Democrats Abroad's main goal is to make sure that every Democrat living abroad votes and to help swing elections in the U.S. As a practice run for 2020, help us reach all Virginia voters living abroad and register them to vote from abroad: 2019 Virginia state elections will decide the majority in both the House of Delegates and the State Senate.
