It's primary season! See you in Berlin, Dresden, Jena & Leipzig

We're back from the Annual General Meeting in Munich and full of energy to help as many Americans vote from Berlin. You can catch a glimpse of the weekend and #teamBerlin in this photo album (Facebook).

There was also a great turnout (photos on Twitter) at the January 2020 kickoff meeting. Thanks to everyone who came and signed up to get involved this year!

Did you know Democrats Abroad runs its own primary? March 3-10, 2020, Americans abroad can vote for a Democratic presidential candidate in the Global Presidential Primary. There are over 30 polling places around Germany, including four in the east: Berlin, DresdenLeipzig, and Jena. You can also return your ballot by post, email, or fax. More details about in-person voting locations at the end.

Join us on Tuesday, Feb 4th for the monthly meeting in Berlin at Brauhaus Südstern. It'll be right after the Iowa caucuses, so there'll be lots to discuss -- and you can get help with registering to vote and find out more about getting involved. RSVP & see you there!

Updates

Volunteer at the Global Primary

There will be four voting centers in eastern Germany, which is a big undertaking -- all powered by volunteers. To help make these primary polling places run smoothly, we need YOUR HELP with setup, greeting voters, registration, ballot box observing, ballot counting, and clean-up. If you can pitch in for a few hours, sign up here:

Kiez 💙 Phonebanking

We now have Kiez teams in Pankow, Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte, Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Moabit, Wedding, and Friedrichshain!

They'll be organizing neighborhood phonebanking parties in the latter half of February, to invite members to the Global Presidential Primary and remind them to request their ballots.

If you can offer your living room or office on one evening so a group of 4-6 volunteers from your Kiez can make phone calls (over the internet), please let us know! Drop a line to [email protected]

Primary Eligibility

Democrats Abroad has just a few requirements for voting in the primary:

  • Be abroad and be a U.S. citizen
  • Be a member of Democrats Abroad (you can join now or even at the voting center)
  • Be 18 years old as of November 3, 2020
  • Not have voted, or plan to vote, in any other 2020 state presidential primary (see below for more details)

You can only vote in the presidential primary once. That means that if you vote in the Global Primary but also want to vote in your state for down-ballot primary races (such as for your congressperson), you can! Just skip the presidential question on your state primary ballot.

Media Requests

If you're a journalist and would like to interview someone or cover the primary, please email [email protected] with your question or request, we'll be in touch right away.

Happy New Year! How you can register to vote in person & get involved in 2020 in Berlin

Happy new year! We hope you're rested and recovered from your holiday celebrations, and ready for 2020. First things first:

  • Go to votefromabroad.org to request your overseas ballot. You need to do this every calendar year to make sure you can vote.
  • Tell a friend to do the same!

If you need help with registering and requesting your ballot, we're here to help! Email [email protected] and come to any of the events all around Berlin, Potsdam, Leipzig, and Dresden (upcoming event list below).

We'll be kicking off 2020 in Berlin on Wednesday January 15, 2020 at The Castle in Mitte. We'll be sharing information about how to register to vote and get involved in Berlin, and finishing out the evening in our usual political pub-night style.

That's not the only event this month though: the Dresden precinct is getting together on Jan 18th, as well as the Mitte(Jan 20) and Kreuzberg (Jan 23) Kiez groups. Join activists and organizers from all over Germany at the Annual General Meeting in Munich (Jan 24-26) -- it's not too late to register!

Help us by keeping an eye out for a temporary Berlin headquarters the next few months. We're happy to discuss office sublet or sharing options -- most of our voter registration and phone banking will usually be on evenings & weekends. Got an idea where our 2020 home could be, near transit with great internet? Read our wishlist and drop us a line!

Updates

Volunteering in 2020

2020 is the best time to get involved and have an impact on the future of the U.S. You can make a difference from here in Germany, reaching out to voters living abroad, making sure people register and request their ballots, and more!

  • As we gear up in 2020, help keep our websites, Facebook, and Twitter accounts lively and up-to-date as Web & Social Media volunteer
  • Become a Kiez Captain to get out the vote and help neighbors and volunteers in different Berlin districts
  • Reach out to U.S. students studying at universities in Germany vote as the Study Abroad Coordinator
  • Prefer something you can do at home? Phonebankers make calls to other Americans living abroad to remind them about voting. All you need is a computer and headphones.

Sound like something you might be interested in? Send us your questions and how you'd like to get involved to [email protected]

We’re so happy to share that the new Berlin-themed t-shirts have arrived. They’re super comfortable and a great way to show your local Democrats Abroad pride!

End-of-the-year Kiez meetups + save the date for January 2020

At last week's meeting, we swapped (ate) cookies and thanked all the volunteers and helpers who've pitched in at events and as organizers this year. Thomas Finnerty, our fall 2019 intern wrote a short recap of the party. Thanks Thomas for all his great work over the last few months!

Save the date for our first event in 2020: we'll be getting together on Wed. January 15, 2020 to register to vote, request absentee ballots, and training everyone how to help others do the same.

There won't be a political pub night in December. Instead, we encourage you to support some of the kiez events, if they happen to be in your neighborhood. Check out the event listings below, like the one tonight in Mitte near Friedrichstrasse.

We are still exploring options for a temporary Berlin headquarters starting in spring 2020. Ideally an office sublet, and we're happy to discuss sharing arrangements since our voter registration and phone banking will be mostly evenings & weekends. Got a hot tip for space near transit with great internet? Let us know!

Thanks to everyone who got in touch so far with ideas for our temporary 2020 Berlin HQ. We're looking at all the options and happy to get more leads from you all on office sublets where we can host voter registration & phonebanking drives.

  • Accessible location, ideally near 2 transit lines
  • Access on nights and weekends
  • Solid internet connection
  • Room for 4-6 people at desks
  • Storage (minimal, for flyers and voter info material)

That's the summary -- here are more details about what we we're looking for. Got a lead? Drop us a line: [email protected]

Help more 2020 candidates get on the primary ballot!

Democrats Abroad's Global Presidential Primary runs March 3-10, 2020. To appear on that ballot, 300 members need to sign the candidate's petition by January 6, 2020.

Just a few signatures stand between many candidates and getting on the primary ballot: visit the candidate petitions page to make sure your favorites make it! Here are step-by-step instructions on how to sign petitions.

Become a Kiez captain for your neighborhood

Each of us loves our own neighborhood, so we've started Kiez Captains to get out the vote and help connect neighbors and volunteers in different Berlin districts. We're still looking for leaders in Friedrichshain, Charlottenburg, Schöneberg, Tempelhof, and other areas.

Kiez Captains are helping us reach American voters in every corner of Berlin in 2020. It's a 5-hour a month commitment, find out more about what it entails. Write [email protected] if you'd like to step up and become a Kiez Captain in your neighborhood.

How To Sign Candidate Petitions for the Global Presidential Primary

The Global Presidential Primary will be held from March 3-10, 2020. This primary allows voters living abroad to cast a primary vote for a candidate of their choice. For any candidate to get on the Global Presidential Primary ballot, they need 300 signatures from Democrats Abroad members. So far, only Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren have qualified. You are allowed to sign the petition for as many or as few candidates as you would like and are not required to cast a vote in the primary for any candidate you signed a petition for.

To sign the petition, you must be willing to share your name and email with the campaign. Signing a petition only takes a few minutes. The best way to ensure a democratic vote is to have all qualified candidates on the ballot, so please follow these steps and sign the candidate petitions!

Step 1: Go to www.democratsabroad.org

This is the main website for Democrats Abroad where you can find information about local, national, and international events. You can use this website to RSVP for events, sign up for caucuses, and stay up to date on what our Democrats Abroad members from around the world are up to!

Step 2: Log into your account

If you receive emails from Democrats Abroad currently, you have an account. If you don’t think you have an account, you can create one on this page!

Step 3: On main screen, click on “Add your candidate to the Democrats Abroad Primary Ballot- Sign their petition now”

You can also click here to go to the petition page: http://www.democratsabroad.org/candidate_petitions

Step 4: Select a candidate’s profile

Step 5: Click orange link that says, “Sign now to add _____________ to the Democrats Abroad presidential primary ballot”.

In this example, Amy Klobuchar has been selected.

Step 6: Fill in your information

It’s that simple! Now follow these steps to make sure all of your favorite candidates make it on to the 2020 Global Presidential Primary ballot!

December Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Night

On Tuesday, December 3rd, the Democrats Abroad Berlin chapter met at Begegnungsstätte Falckensteinstraße for a holiday cookie swap and volunteer appreciation night. Members brought cookies to share while Diego, our chair, acknowledged each of the volunteers who have helped us throughout the year. We discussed the importance of signing the Global Presidential Primary candidate petitions and new leadership roles like Kiez Captains and Phone Bank Coordinators. Over glühwein and holiday cookies, we all soaked in the holiday atmosphere in our last meeting before the new year.

Members had an opportunity to snag some new Democrats Abroad swag with the arrival of our new T-shirts coming in two different styles. All volunteers were also able to pick from a variety of buttons at the end of the night. Once again we thank everyone who has volunteered with us and hope you continue to serve!
