Election Spotlight - New Mexico's First Congressional Race

This next woman could make history!
The United States has never elected a Native American woman to Congress, but that could change with Debra Haarland, who is running in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional district. Haarland won the Democratic Party Nomination in June, and her Republican opponent is Janice Arnold-Jones.
Haarland is extremely active in politics and a diligent advocate for Native American rights. She graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law specializing in Indian Law in 2006. In 2008, she was a full time volunteer on Obama’s presidential campaign, and in 2012 Haarland served as the New Mexico state Native American vote director for Obama’s reelection campaign. In 2015, Haarland was elected to be the Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. During her two years as Chair, Haarland led New Mexico to flip its State House from red to blue. She is also an activist and traveled to Standing Rock to support the Standing Rock people.
Haarland is focused on acting fast to counteract climate change by fighting for 100% clean energy, and putting people over profits. She also believes that income inequality cannot be ignored any longer, and will fight for better and fairer infrastructure. Along with better infrastructure, Haarland will fight for better conditions for working families - a higher minimum wage, expanding social security, free child care and medicare for all. Haarland is also determined to create better public education, including debt-free college and universal pre-k. Haarland is also a stark advocate for women, minorities and immigrants. She will fight for full rights for all. To learn more visit https://debforcongress.com/

Election Spotlight - Minnesota's Second Congressional District

Happy Tuesday and Election Spotlight Day!
Minnesota has four seats in the House up for reelection in 2018, one of them being Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District where Angie Craig, the only Democrat in the race, is running against Incumbent Representative Jason Lewis, a Republican. This district is a vital swing vote, and Lewis beat Craig by 1.8% in 2016, even though Craig outspent Lewis by 3 million dollars. The Washington Post rated this race as a top-10 race this cycle. The primary will take place on August 14, 2018.
After putting herself through college, Craig worked as a newspaper reporter, then became the head of Global Human Resources for St. Jude Medical. Craig and her wife have four boys - three in college and one in high school. She is a dedicated mother, and even had to fight to adopt her sons. Craig is incredibly dedicated to her community, and wants to create policy that actually puts people first. She was inspired to run for Congress because “Americans’ hard work is not paying off like it used to” (angiecraig.com).
Craig wants to grow the American economy by fostering small businesses and creating jobs for today and tomorrow, an area which she already has experience as she lead a workforce of 16,000 employees at St. Jude. She strives to create affordable, accessible healthcare for all and better education, including public education, career training and college. Craig also wants all veterans and senior citizens to have access to the best healthcare and social programs possible. She is an advocate for the environment, women, and is pro common sense gun laws. Help celebrate 🌈 LGBT Pride at Stadtfest this weekend
It's a busy and exciting week here in Berlin:
Democrats Abroad Berlin is thrilled to participate in the Lesbisch-Schwules Stadtfest in Schöneberg again this weekend! We will have a booth on both days where we’ll mingle with festival attendees, sell DA swag, and register Americans abroad to vote. It's fun to be right in the middle of street fest, and the atmosphere is amazing with hundreds of thousands of visitors over the course of the weekend.
How you can help
Volunteer for a few hours this weekendwith a friend to reach out to other Americans living overseas. We especially need more volunteers in the mornings and evenings, and we promise: it's a great time!
4th of July Photos
We had a great time celebrating Independence Day as Americans (and friends) in Berlin, we estimate that over 100 people showed up! Thanks to everyone who joined us, who registered to vote, brought food, baked pies, and made it an awesome 4th of July. ►Check out the photos from the party
