Adelaide Lights for Liberty

The South Australian Chapter of Democrats Abroad Australia is joining the world-wide Lights for Liberty Vigil to protest the detention of people seeking asylum in concentration camps along the southern border of the United States. Everyone, of all ages, is welcome to participate, and we extend a special invitation to U.S. citizens living overseas. We must raise our voices to oppose these atrocities.

The Adelaide Lights for Liberty Vigil joins over 500 events around the world to condemn the horrific conditions that people seeking asylum or with undocumented status are being subjected to. Among the people allowed through ports of entry and detained, children continue to be separated from family members. Of those unlawfully turned away and forced to wait in dangerous conditions before asserting their legal right to claim asylum, some in desperation have attempted dangerous border crossings elsewhere. These atrocities are being carried out in the name of every American, in defiance of U.S. law and of international conventions on the rights of refugees*. We are gathering to hold up the voices of the children, young people, and adults so persecuted and harmed, to honour the work of organisations fighting for justice and providing relief and support, and for all those protesting or otherwise shining a light. We stand in opposition to these affronts to humanity, until every person is free from detention.

Please bring a sign and candle (we will also bring a number of both that you're welcome to hold), or light a candle wherever you are. Hope to see you there!

*We will meet near the Rotunda

*Under the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 protocol, the latter adopted into U.S. law, the U.S. must recognise refugees who fear persecution, including threats to life or freedom, who are not able to get help from their home country (see the United Nations office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, and the American Immigration Council,
