Elaine Thomas may be the member of our chapter who is the greatest fountain of energy and activism in Hamburg. Elaine is a professional actress, singer, teacher, and poet, and in 2020 she was selected as a Poet Laureate by the Global Black Caucus of Democrats Abroad. Now she is also the head of the Afrotopia Black Academy, an educational co-operation with the Hamburger Volkshochschule. The public is invited to the opening ceremony of Afrotopia Black Academy on February 23rd, 2024.
A Volkshochschule is a public institution for adult education that is common in Germany and other Nordic countries. At the time of writing, the course listings for the Volkshochschule in Hamburg include 13 offerings from Afrotopia Black Academy, seven of which are led by Elaine.
Afrotopia Black Academy will offer a wide variety of courses, symposia, and workshops that will give insight into the political discourse, the rich culture, innovative ideas and varied talents of Black communities in Germany. The opening ceremony on February 23rd promises to be an inspirational event, at which the fascinating diversity of Black and African perspectives, and those of the African diaspora, will be celebrated.
