The aim of this event is to update Americans abroad on Democrats Abroad tax advocacy work and explain what steps are needed to pass Residency Based Taxation. Presented by Rebecca Lammers, Chair of the Democrats Abroad Taxation Task Force and International Member of the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel. We will clarify what is going on in Washington DC and abroad on Americans abroad tax advocacy work, steps we are taking, and how you can get involved to help pass Residency Based Taxation.
This session is for Americans abroad/U.S. citizens/dual citizens/expats who:
- Are angry, scared, upset, or anxious about Americans abroad tax problems
- You don't feel like you know enough but want to learn more
- You're considering renouncing your US citizenship over the tax issues
- Want to get involved and help make RBT a reality
Topics discussed in the session will include:
- What is Residency Based Taxation (RBT) and why no bill has been introduced in Congress to pass it
- Why FATCA isn't to blame for all American abroad tax problems
- The American abroad tax advocacy landscape
- What's going on in Washington DC
- The legislative outlook for 2024
- Short and long term prospects for improvements and changes to taxes for Americans abroad
- Why voting in all federal races is important to help pass RBT
- Opportunities to get involved in the Taxation Task Force and make a different to help pass RBT
