Global Progressive Caucus 2023 Year in Review

Dear progressives,

Thank you for your time, energy, and contributions to our Democrats Abroad Global Progressive Caucus (proDA) over the last year! 2023 saw our movement score significant wins, including some exciting midterm election results, which would not have been possible without your vote and your voice. At the same time, developments in the world highlighted the long road ahead toward true freedom and equality. Reflecting on what we did in 2023, we hope to chart a path toward peace, justice, and opportunity for all as we head into the new year.

In 2023, proDA succeeded in:

  • Launching a 2023 member survey to set priorities for our caucus;
  • Holding a monthly virtual discussion series, with the strong support of Betsy Ettorre and Daniel Stein, including the following recorded events:
  • Tackling Wealth Inequality from Cradle to Rocking Chair with Rep. Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) and Alex Lawson (Social Security Works),
  • Get Real, Get Radical for Environmental Justice with Madonna Thunder Hawk (Lakota People’s Law Project), Davante Lewis (Louisiana District 3 Public Service Commissioner), Carla Rae Marshall (Black Hills Clean Water Alliance), and Anthony Rogers-Wright (New York Lawyers for the Public),Interest
  • Fair Share Taxation and Enforcement with Gabriel Zucman (University of California, Berkeley),
  • A 21st-Century Economic Bill of Rights and Its Growing Momentum on the Road to Democratic Success in 2024 with Prof. Harvey J. Kaye (University of Wisconsin-Green Bay), Alan Minsky (Progressive Democrats of America), and Troy N. Miller (West Virginia Democratic Party),
  • Progressive Agenda for Success in 2024 and beyond–discussion of the transformational change that could restore trust in government and the Democratic Party,
  • proDA Kitchen Table Talk Planning to craft the DA Platform as our chance to help determine the values and priorities of our state party, as well as signal to the Democratic Party where we stand on key issues;
  • Sending monthly newsletters to keep members apprised of important voting information, events, and campaigns;
  • Sharing unique social media content on voting rights, campaign finance reform, reparations, student loan justice, the labor movement, and more, with special thanks to Bruce Miller and Sue Kronenfeld for their weekly contributions;
  • Speaking to progressive priorities in global events with Democratic candidates and elected officials;
  • Accompanying nearly 300 organizations in endorsing Congresswoman Cori Bush’s Reparations NOW resolution;
  • Introducing and advocating for the successful passage of a DA Resolution in Support of a 21st-Century Economic Bill of Rights and a Resolution to Keep Fossil Fuels in the Ground;
  • Joining a coalition of more than 100 organizations and individuals in signing a letter to New York Governor Kathy Hochul in support of a state reparations commission; and
  • Raising donations to elect progressive candidates and other Democrats up and down the ballot.

As we reflect on our activities in 2023, we are also looking forward to building on our achievements in the coming year in order to increase transparency, accountability, and fairness in policies, government, and our party.

proDA’s 2024 goals include:

  • Ensuring that delivering on progressive priorities is central in the 2024 election year;
  • Conducting our annual member survey;
  • Encouraging our members to vote in the DA Global Presidential Primary;
  • Campaigning for progressive candidates to represent DA at the 2024 Democratic National Convention;
  • Highlighting important 2024 races up and down the ballot with primary candidate events that feature progressive contestants;
  • Creating inclusive spaces for dialogue around key issues through Kitchen Table Talks and in monthly member meetings;
  • Advocating for the inclusion of popular progressive priorities in the 2024 DA Platform;
  • Deepening our awareness of progressive approaches to key issues in our Monthly Mondays discussion series;
  • Promoting transparency within DA through listening and thoughtful exchange;
  • Collaborating with other DA caucuses and task forces to support greater inclusivity in DA and the Democratic Party;
  • Expanding our social media presence to reach more progressive Americans abroad; and
  • Strengthening our relationships with progressive organizations and state party members across the United States.
