Canada Country Chair / Chair, Quebec / DPCA Voting Representative

A native New Yorker (downstate) I have lived in Montreal, Quebec, Canada for 33 years. Trained as a social worker, I have a passion for providing services to those in need and so I have prioritized GOTV as my primary DA mission. We have hundreds of thousands of Americans here in Canada who NEED to vote in US elections and I want to reach as many of them as possible.

    US TAXES - IRA'S, GIFTING, ESTATE PLANNING

    Presenter is: Charmaine Ko, Polaris Tax Counsel, cross-border tax lawyer

    While the Canadian Income Tax Act contains certain provisions which can permit a tax-neutral transfer of an IRA to an RRSP, the process is not without its pitfalls, and the right conditions must be in place for such transfers to occur on a tax-neutral basis. This webinar will provide an overview of the relevant rules and provide some examples of when a tax-neutral transfer may and may not be possible.

    This webinar will also provide an overview of the basics of the US gift and estate tax regimes and the US lifetime gift and estate tax exemption, with consideration to the application of the Canada-US Tax Treaty.

    The ticket price to this event is $10 USD.  We chose this price point realizing that many of our members might like to attend one, two, or three of our sessions and we wanted to select a ticket price that was reasonable.  We would expect that the last session on Business owners would attract its own, individual audience.

    The event will be recorded. Only people who purchase a ticket will receive the recording. If you cannot make the event, but would like a recording, please purchase a ticket in advance.

    We would like all those RSVPing to know that tickets are non-refundable.  But these funds are going toward a good cause - the 2022 GOTV effort all across Canada.  And we thank everyone for supporting this effort.  I would add here that if you find yourself in a position to donate more than the $10 per ticket, please know that no donation, large or small, will be turned away.  Every dollar donated = four more CallHub calls or 10 texts to members.  It all matters and it all adds up.

  • OPERATING A CANADIAN BUSINESS AS A US CITIZEN

    Presenter is: Max Reed, cross-border lawyer at Polaris Tax counsel.  You can read more about Max Reed here --> https://polaristax.com/max-reed/

    The 2017 tax reforms entirely changed the tax reforms around operating a business as a US taxpayer resident in Canada. This webinar will provide an overview of those changes and examine strategies for dealing with the complexity as a Canadian resident US citizen who wants to incorporate. Incorporation can still provide significant tax benefits — even for those with double tax exposure. Specifically, the webinar will cover at a high level:

    • Tax benefits of incorporation
    • The US repatriation tax and strategies for offsetting it;
    • The US GILTI rules and strategies to mitigate them;
    • Other tax planning ideas for incorporated business owners.

    The ticket price to this event is $20.22 USD.   We would like all those RSVPing to know that tickets are non-refundable.  But these funds are going toward a good cause - the 2022 GOTV effort all across Canada.  And we thank everyone for supporting this effort.

    The event will be recorded. Only people who purchase a ticket will receive the recording. If you cannot make the event, but would like a recording, please purchase a ticket in advance.

    I would add here that if you find yourself in a position to donate more than the $20.22 per ticket, please know that no donation, large or small, will be turned away.  Every dollar donated = four more CallHub calls or 10 texts to members.  It all matters and it all adds up.

    DA Quebec (formerly DA Montreal) is a chapter of  Democrats Abroad Canada, the official country committee for U.S. Democrats living in Canada.   We are helping US citizens living in Quebec register to vote for US elections and keeping them informed on important issues.  We have a diverse community of enthusiastic voters, members, and volunteers all over the province, from Montreal to Quebec City.   And we're always looking for more. If you're interested in getting involved and putting your skills to good use, reach out to us. We're always looking for dedicated volunteers.

     It is critical we collectively do all that is possible to encourage the estimated 650k - 1m Americans in Canada to vote! Hundreds of American citizen volunteers across Canada are working to educate all eligible U.S. voters on their right to vote and how to get their ballots to vote in every election. That includes Canadians who were born in the U.S. and those born in Canada to an American parent(s), who therefore have the right to vote. Americans living in Canada CAN deliver the difference in close elections. To volunteer, email Randi Weitzner, Chapter Chair.

    Go to VoteFromAbroad.org today to register for your ballot.

    The Quebec Chapter posts events and news items on this page and on our Facebook page.  Please scroll down to the bottom of the page to see what is happening and RSVP for events that are of interest to you.

    Make "Good Trouble"

    and Save Our Democracy!

    A fundraiser in celebration of the life and work of the late Georgia Congressman and Civil Rights leader, John R. Lewis.

    john_lewis_selma_1965.1c.jpg

    Democrats Abroad is commemorating Congressman John Lewis with two online screenings of the documentary "John Lewis - Get in the Way" on July 11, various actions days after Congress resumes legislative business, and a Forum on July 17, the one-year anniversary of his passing.

    Often described as the conscience of the Congress, John Lewis was a friend to Democrats Abroad. To raise funds for DA’s GOTV efforts, we ask everyone—whether you attend or not—to donate $19.65—or for those who wish to be a Gold Star Supporter, $80 representing the 80 years of John Lewis’ extraordinary, courageous life.

    Please join Democrats Abroad to honor the memory of John Lewis and carry forward the flame of his dedication to voting rights for all.

    Donations are made to Democrats Abroad and not to any candidate or candidate's committee.  Donations to Democrats Abroad (Democratic Party Committee Abroad) can only be made by American citizens and lawful Permanent Residents.  Donations to Democrats Abroad are not tax-deductible for Federal income tax purposes.

    Fundraiser for Voter Protection in Georgia and all over the United States

    Georgia's state law, as well as other state bills designed to suppress the vote make passing the federal bill S1 - the "For the People Act" - a crucial next step!

    DA will be rolling out an action campaign for all members and committees to ACT on to push our senators to pass this fundamental bill. That action will include support for an amendment to the bill further supporting Americans abroad voting rights.
