Thanks to DA Vancouver member Melek Ortabasi and her partner Cliff Ng for organizing the Lights For Liberty vigil up at SFU's Richard Bolton Park. The road closure made it a bit difficult to find but we had 35-40 stalwarts.
Our message is clear: Close the detention camps. Treat asylum seekers with dignity. Recognize the valuable contributions of refugees and illegal immigrants to American society and the military.

JPS Financial Services will present their popular US Tax Seminar on Saturday, March 9, at 11 a.m. This year is a "must attend" - the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) has changed US tax law in 2018.
Major changes include a standard deduction that has practically doubled but also includes elimination of personal exemption amounts and important changes you'll want to know if you itemize deductions.
This Seminar is critical for US citizens in Canada who would like a comprehensive overview for filing US taxes and informational forms for the 2018 tax year.
Topics to be covered include:
- TCJA changes taking affect for the 2018 tax year
- Who needs to be aware of US tax compliance
- Tax basics for US Citizens in Canada
- Common scenarios and forms that need to be filed
- Estates and Gifts
Join us at Kensington Community Centre, 5175 Dumfries, Vancouver, V5P 3A2. Cost of the seminar is $20 -- and you must register in advance.
Buy tickets at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4076899 or mail a $20 cheque of money order made out to "Democrats Abroad Vancouver" to JPS Financial Services, 205 - 2248 Elgin Ave, Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 2B2.
Very sorry, no "at the door" registrations accepted at this event because handouts will be pre-printed for participants.
Please mark down Saturday, January 26, 2019, on your calendar and come out to the DA Vancouver Annual General Meeting at the Kensington Community Centre, 5175 Dumfries Street, Vancouver, BC, V5P 3A2 (near Knight & 35th). The meeting will start at 11:30 a.m. and last about an hour. Refreshments will be served (in case you need more inspiration to come).
Please bring your ideas about how we can get more ex-pat Americans to register and vote in the 2020 US election.
We invite Americans living outside the US to submit their experiences of being a US taxpayer filing from abroad.
Democrats Abroad has invested a great deal of time making Congress aware of the issues we as non-resident taxpayers face filing from abroad - the complexity of the forms; the cost of preparing reports and filings (even when no taxes are owed); the stress of preparing accurate filings to declare overseas income and accounts given the penalties for filing errors; the tax code provisions that result in the double or punitive taxation of foreign source income; etc.
We will use the submissions to this survey to provide further data and testimony of our experiences to help us advocate for important reforms to the US tax code.
Thank you for taking the time to prepare your submission and for your support for Democrats Abroad's tax advocacy work.

Americans in the Lower Mainland, along with their Canadian friends, will have a choice of three venues on Monday September 26 to watch the First US Presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, hosted by Democrats Abroad. This much-anticipated event is expected to draw record turnouts as the two candidates meet face to face for the first time. The stark differences in strategies, positions, expertise and competence will be in full view.
Democrats Abroad’s widespread constituency will have a choice of three convenient locations. The marquee event will be Steamworks at Waterfront station, a major transit hub with a fantastic view of the harbor, and a great menu. Additionally we will meet at the Lounge at Pacific Inn for the many who live in the South Surrey/White Rock area, and at Cedar Cottage Pub in east Vancouver.
Most crucial: Democrats Abroad will have voter registration available onsite for those voters who have not yet registered. The US election is less than 6 weeks away, and the world is holding its breath. What will Americans do? Democrats Abroad is reaching out to all overseas Americans to ensure they receive their ballots by registering, either in person at one of the venues, or online at www.votefromabroad.org
