Vice Chair, Switzerland

I grew up in a union household and have voted Democrat as long as I can remember. This isn't just because I have directly benefited from the social safety net that Democrats are fighting to protect and strengthen, but also because I believe everyone should have access to that safety net. It should be there for us when we need it.

While Democrats won in 2020, controlling the House, Senate, and White House, we still have a lot of work to do. The Senate is deadlocked due to the combination of the lazy filibuster and the GOP members who refuse to work across the aisle. Without a Senate that will pass legislature, the only way to accomplish anything is with Executive Orders. That isn't the way our government is designed to operate.

There is so much that needs to be pushed forward for the good of the country as well as its residents and citizens:

  • Healthcare reform (including access for women and transgender individuals)
  • Minimum wage
  • Climate policy
  • Voter protection (including an end to partisan gerrymandering)
  • Racial justice for BIPOC
  • Common sense gun control
  • Tax policy for tax payers living in- and outside of the US
  • Immigration reform
  • ... and much more

The 45th Presidential Administration spurred many people into political action; I was definitely one of them. Now we must keep going. We have to remind our leaders that they work for us and failure to act can result in a failure to re-elect. We, the voters, have to hold power to account and make sure that the legislators are doing the job for which they are being handsomely paid. It is my opinion that remaining active in Democrats Abroad Switzerland is the best way for me to effect change, and I think it is a great way for all US citizens living in Switzerland to do so.

I invite anyone reading this to join us:

Help US Citizens Abroad get Covid-19 Vaccines

Go to to write to your Member of Congress today and ask them to provide vaccines to US citizens abroad who need them.

Unfortunately, Covid-19 is not going away. DACH applauds the US for leading the way in getting vaccines to the rest of the world, but there are still many US citizens living (and dying) outside the United States who lack access to vaccines. Whether you have already received a vaccine or not, we hope you will show solidarity with your fellow citizens abroad who are still waiting for theirs.

Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona is among many Members of Congress who are trying to get the message to the White House and the State Department that there are still many US citizens living abroad who need our help, if we are to fulfill our government's pledge that ALL US citizens will have access to vaccines. YOU can help by writing to YOUR Representative TODAY to support Rep. Grijalva in his efforts. It's pretty simple and it only takes a couple minutes - and you might just save some lives. So do it today - it would be great if members of Congress woke up on Monday to find thousands of messages from their constituents asking them to do the right thing. Here are just a few quick steps that YOU can take to make it happen:

    1. Click here to write to your Member of Congress.
    2. Fill in your voting address in the United States.
    3. Select your House member.
    4. Copy this language into the subject line: "Sign on to Rep. Grijalva's Letter asking for Vaccines for Americans Abroad"
    5. Copy the message below into the space provided - and take a few seconds to read it - it really makes the case.
    6. Fill in any details required - (use 000-000-0000 if you don't have a US phone number - and use your voting address in the US)
    7. SEND!

Once you're done, please forward this message to friends and families inside and outside the United States and URGE them to URGENTLY reach out to their own Congressional Rep. Our fellow citizens need all the help that we can give them. If you have any doubts, please take a look at this video prepared by US citizens abroad just like you - and share it with others.

Click here for more information about what Democrats Abroad's COVID TASK FORCE is doing about publicizing this issue - and reach Senator Chris Murphy's letter to Secretary Blinken asking for vaccines for US citizens abroad. Also, please send questions or comments to [email protected]. Together, we can beat this thing.

DPCA Resolutions Dealing with Tax Advocacy

The Democratic Party Committee Abroad (DPCA) voting body met online on August 21 and 22 to vote on Charter Amendments and Resolutions. Your DA Switzerland voting reps know that taxation reform is important to you, so we would like to report on two of the resolutions that were adopted.

As always, you can follow the DA Taxation Task Force’s work on their website. Your DA Switzerland DPCA voting reps will also keep you up-to-date with information about the proposed messaging system and the RBT Coalition’s work.

    Resolution #3
In Support of Development of a DA messaging platform for engaging members in Congressional outreach in support of DA issues-advocacy initiatives

Whereas Democrats Abroad has greatly expanded its advocacy work promoting reforms related to issues affecting Americans abroad and of importance to Democrats Abroad; and

Whereas DA advocacy initiatives routinely feature outreach to U.S. federal and state lawmakers and regulators; and

Whereas state of the art issues-advocacy programs provide activists with platforms that facilitate messaging to elected representatives by: identifying the activist's representative(s); providing sample message language; and sending the message to the activist's representative(s) via their official website, campaign website, or social media pages; and

Whereas DA issues-advocacy coordinators would benefit from data indicating which elected representatives are receiving messages from DA issues-activists, helping them to target representatives for further or follow-up outreach; and

Whereas DA issues-advocacy coordinators would benefit from data, with GDPR compliance, identifying campaign supporters, helping them to target activists for further or follow-up communication; and

Whereas DA's Taxation Task Force has learned from at least 10 years of committed advocacy in support of tax reforms to eliminate double taxation; remove barriers to banking, saving, and investing; and simplify filing from abroad; that reform will happen when enough Americans abroad reach out to their elected representatives and demand it; and

Whereas votes from abroad reach politicians for the most part only once every 2 years, but voices from abroad can reach elected representatives - or candidates for office - continuously and with focus; and

Whereas DA is blessed with volunteers who can set up and maintain a messaging platform, but there will be origination and on-going maintenance costs that will consume organizational funds; and

Whereas DA can access "white label" systems ("off the shelf" web-creation products with functions already in place and ready to be customized) that would facilitate the development of such a platform without the need to start from first principles; and

Whereas DA advocacy teams with any area of focus could make use of the platform; and

Whereas the success of the Democratic Party in driving legislative and regulatory reform is critical to the fate of the nation and the success of the Party in maintaining the support of the U.S. electorate; and

    Whereas the substantial growth of DA caucus and other issues-advocacy teams has created the need for some overarching member-engagement infrastructure and congressional-outreach architecture in order to efficiently facilitate member participation in our campaigns as well as to sensibly coordinate the campaign activities of the issues-advocacy teams;

Therefore Be It Resolved that Democrats Abroad seeks the support of the DPCA Excom for establishment of an ad hoc committee to study the establishment of a messaging tool for DA advocacy teams to engage activists to communicate with those holding elected office or running for elected office about law or regulatory reforms; and

    Be It Further Resolved that Democrats Abroad seeks the support of the DPCA Excom to allocate resources in 2021in support of the work of the ad hoc committee and for reviewing and actioning the recommendations of the committee;

Be it further resolved that the naming of this platform should be carefully considered to not cause confusion with any other DA platform, e.g., / VFA.

    Resolution #4
In Support of Democrats Abroad Joining the RBT Coalition

Whereas Democrats Abroad (DA) has invested heavily in advocacy in support of tax- and financial-account-reporting relief for bona fide Americans abroad; and

Whereas DA is committed to Residency Based Taxation (RBT) as a policy reform that would eliminate double taxation of income; remove barriers to saving and investing; and greatly simplify tax-filing from abroad; and

Whereas arguments in support of this reform will have greater impact on lawmakers the greater the number of individuals and organizations presenting them; and

Whereas DA has worked in collaboration or in parallel with many other organizations representing Americans abroad; and

Whereas, in the area of tax advocacy, DA has a strong working relationship with American Citizens Abroad (ACA); and

Whereas ACA is leading the establishment of an RBT Coalition to demonstrate broad support for RBT [see proposal document below]; and

    Whereas the DA Taxation Task Force Chair and members who have worked with ACA are persuaded that ACA will be faithful to the terms and conditions outlined in the proposal document and will guard against “mission creep”;

Therefore Be It Resolved that Democrats Abroad seeks the support of the DPCA Excom to become a member of the RBT Coalition; and

Be It Further Resolved that the DPCA Excom reserves the right to withdraw from the Coalition should it stray from what is profiled in the proposal document or for any other reason.

Kids should be learning to think critically in school - and to understand the full history of our country, even the painful parts.
Our politicians should be focused on helping students and teachers who are still struggling with fallout from COVID--rather than punishing teachers for speaking the truth.

    • Petition: "Federal Recognition for the Duwamish Tribe," via
The Duwamish are the First People of present-day Seattle, and are the original stewards of this land. Since time immemorial, the Duwamish Tribe has maintained their ancestral home in traditional, sustainable ways for the benefit of all. Seattle is built upon and thrives on the lands of the Duwamish People, and the City still carries the name of the Tribe’s most well-known leader, Chief Si’ahl (Seattle).
Chief Si’ahl of the Duwamish and Suquamish Tribes of Indians was the lead signatory of the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855, and that agreement has never been invalidated. Yet the U.S. Government has continually failed to give the Duwamish People their rightful recognition.
Federal recognition does not create a tribe, but honors the government-to-government relationship between tribes and the United States. It is also vital to protecting the cultural integrity of the Duwamish People.

In The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, Michelle Alexander argues that, “An extraordinary percentage of Black men in the United States are legally barred from voting today, just as they have throughout most of American history.” Throughout Alexander’s book, she explains how incarceration is the tool used to disenfranchise formerly imprisoned voters and that a racist lawmaking and penal system in the United States replaced Jim Crow laws as the mechanism to do so.

In July 2021, Democrats Abroad Switzerland - Basel will host an online letter and postcard writing solidarity action to support those who are currently incarcerated in Virginia and Florida--two states where voting rights can be restored to incarcerated individuals upon their release from prison.

  • DACH Welcomes President Biden to Geneva with Rally

    Press contact: Amy Kasper, [email protected], +41 78 734 37 97

U.S. citizens in Switzerland are excited to welcome their 46th President during his first official overseas tour since taking office earlier this year. Membership of Democrats Abroad Switzerland (DACH) view this visit as “a renewed commitment to allies and partners” just as President Biden conveyed in his own words: “demonstrating the capacity of democracies to both meet the challenges and deter the threats of this new age.”

President Joe Biden kicked off his European visit Thursday by meeting with Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Both leaders will be attending the Group of Seven (G7) Summit set this year in Cornwall, England starting today 11 June to 13 June where world leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan will gather alongside presidents of the European Commission and the European Council. Afterward Biden will head to Belgium on 14-15 June to meet with the leadership of NATO and the EU. Finally, the trip will culminate in Geneva on 15-16 June to meet with Swiss officials before a much-anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Democrats Abroad warmly welcomes President Biden’s visit, and is proud to see him representing the U.S. on the world stage. DACH Chair Eric Burns says it well: “Democrats Abroad Switzerland is extremely proud to welcome Biden to Geneva. As U.S. citizens abroad we feel directly the impact of U.S. foreign policy so we welcome Biden’s restorative and constructive approach. Our June 16th rally is a strong show of support for the president we worked so hard to elect into office.”

To show support, DACH will be holding a rally in Geneva on Wednesday, June 16 from 11:00-13:00. Congratulatory letters from members will also be sent to President Biden via the United States Embassy in Bern welcoming him to Switzerland and expressing support for his continued efforts to combat COVID-19, bolster the U.S. economy and strategic trade agreements, address the climate crisis head-on, and more. These are challenges which transcend borders and require international and multilateral cooperation, and DACH is pleased that under President Biden, the U.S. is once again a strong global partner.

“The feeling of relief and excitement as we prepare for President Biden's visit is a welcome change from our political activism over the past four years,” said DACH Vice Chair Liz Voss, who was intimately involved with Democrats Abroad’s effort to elect Biden in the 2020 General Election. “I hope this visit energizes our members and encourages them to remain politically active heading into the midterms.”

During the recent election, Democrats Abroad was integral in increasing voter turnout among overseas voters by 250 percent. Approximately 4.8 million U.S. citizens live outside of the United States, according to the U.S. Federal Voting Assistance Program which regularly conducts Overseas Citizen Population Analysis Report. The most recent OCPA report updated in 2018 found that of the 4.8 million living abroad (more than half the size of Switzerland’s population), 2.9 million were eligible to vote. In 2020, they accounted for more than 2 million votes that noticeably tipped the scales in Joe Biden’s favor over his incumbent opponent Donald Trump.

Building on this incredible success, Democrats Abroad continues its work toward connecting U.S. citizens overseas and providing them with a platform to remain civically engaged. The organization is also already preparing for the 2022 midterm elections, which will be crucial to expand Democratic majorities in Congress and help execute the agenda upon which President Biden campaigned.

Therefore Democrats Abroad calls on President Biden and Congress to include all Americans in his commitment, regardless of where they reside, and to empower and direct the Departments of State and of Health and Human Services to cooperate with the CDC, vaccine manufacturers, and public health authorities worldwide to provide, or ensure the availability of, vaccinations for all Americans abroad, and to support the global availability of adequate vaccine supplies as a critical step in ending the pandemic worldwide.

    DA Switzerland Women's Caucus

This year the DACH Women’s Caucus will focus on three areas:

    1. Opportunity alerts for members to contact lawmakers in support of legislation for women’s rights and equal opportunity. For example, in March the House removed the deadline for ERA passage and 12 states still need to ratify the bill.
    2. Strengthening our sisterhood by aligning with initiatives driven by the DA Global Women’s Caucus as well as women’s organizations such as Supermajority and Emerge.
    3. Informing ourselves about issues critical to women’s well-being (equal pay, violence against women, childcare, reproductive health, climate action).

If you are interested in getting involved or learning more, please contact Alissa Reindel and Victoria Pao at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.
